Interesting profile Mike: I shall be interested to see how mid leach control and thus pointing work out: please report back! It is just a straight pole stick is it?

Mike, will that not just put a massive crease from the clew to the mast tip when you whack kicker on?

I don't know that it should be any worse than any other big roach mainsail. You've got so much being supported by the battens anyway... ![]() Looking at my sketch I am even more intrigued to know how the mid leech support works out in practice: I can imagine it being better as easily as I can imagine it being worse! It's a windsurfing sail.
Without the mid point support from a boom. Lot of windsurf influence in those foiling mothies. Now they're getting up to the same speeds. |

It looks like a windsurfing sail, but I think, on a stayed mast with more controls and designed to work in a wider wind range, there will be quite marked differences over all. Certainly Moths are going fast enough (and are useless in no wind so don't have to design for a drifter) to be able to use the best of what both dinghies and windsurfers have to offer. Must be a good area in which to be designing.

I guess your right there Jim. It just looked like the load paths along the leech would induce more creasing but I guess this is inherant on any large roach sail and is dealt with by careful panel matching and shaping.
With my aerodynamics hat on, I can see both advantages and disadvantages, and with my practical sailing hat on it looks good but its the number of crap tacks and gybes that will determine whether its sucessful against a more standard Moth sail so not really down to aero benefit! Anyway as long as there are people like Mike to try it out, then we can all look on at the great piccies and comment! |
