rash vests to go over all your kit, worn especially if you're wearning a harness. Also worn as team tops, or some events hand them out and ask you to wear them (Tide Ride and Endeavour trophy, for example, and I think the 29erXX not-a-worlds recently seemed to have them). Some people love them for keeping everything tidy, some people are vehemently opposed to them as they think when they're trapped they'll be able to get their bouyancy aid and possibly harness off and such a top would slow this down.

I find a rash vest on top is good for stopping the tiller going through the BA arms/shoulder strap. Also good at stopping the boom or mainsheet blocks hooking on to the top of the BA mid tack.

I use one for same reason as Charlie. Don't want long tiller going on inside of BA/harness. However, my crew does not because I have to haul him back on board after capsize (self-tacking jib draws and boat just sets off) so I need access to his straps to grab hold of.

Not wanting to make light of things here, but one of the other reasons I wear a rashy on the outside is that I wear a hat/cap between races to keep warm but take it off to race to gives me better awareness. The hat gets stuffed up the vest and stays there til it's needed. |

I'll wear one on the outside of everything, BA included as a crew (there is more to catch on in the front of B14 through the corners) but helming, the BA goes outside

I wear my bouyancy aid under a spray top. This has many great benefits, 1. reduces snags, 2. is both warmer and cooler, and 3. stops the buoyancy riding up when I'm in the water so that I can still see what I'm doing. |

I've always had the BA on top of everything since it would be easier to haul me out of the water and I can ditch it very quickly if it becomes a factor in a entrapment where the buoyancy pushing me up is making the situation worse. Edited by m_liddell |

I used to wear mine under, but hauling people out of the water when doing rescue boat was so much easier if a BA strap was available, I started putting the BA on top. Modern BAs tend not to catch as badly, anyway.
