Hi Doug I saw Filthy Gorgeous in Cowes and I notice you have cockpit speakers! I'd love to know how you have them rigged up. Don't believe anybody who says you can't gybe the asy - it only took us a couple of practices to get our heads around it and we've had no foul ups of any kind since. The tack line you have will do the same job as our strop. By inside gybe I meant the kite comes inside its own luff - i.e. between the kite luff and the forestay. An outside gybe is when the kite goes outside its luff. Both gybes are outside the forestay. Pole doesn't bend at all. We always fly the kite off the pole as it extends forward of the pulpit (paying for that STL on rating - may as well use it!) and we find we have to trim it up and down a lot to adjust for power and angles in the same way you adjust the tack line on a sprit boat. I fitted turning blocks in the middle of the foredeck to keep the pole steady and they're a big improvement. We only fly the asy without a pole when we take the pole off to gybe. It goes straight back on afterwards. I'm surprised you don't notice any speed difference between #1 & #2. I reckon the proj doesn't carry enough upwind sail area and when we get new stuff I'm getting the largest #1 they can fit on the boat. I know you pay for headsail area in a big way but I'm convinced the boat needs it. I've never used a #2 to be fair but our #3 is a waste of time unless it is screaming as there is so little power on offer with it. |

Ta for reply Tim ,
speakers were on boat when I bought Her . We have radio CD below fuse panel , we carry a sml battery , wires run thro boat .. Re gybing , I understand now , brain is old and slow . Will try gybing soon , thanks for advice . I'm amazed you think we don't have enough upwind sail area , we seem to get overpowered really often , mind we do have a light crew generally , and are down to 4 when someone don't turn up , I know weight on rail is important . We use No.1 to about 12-15 knots or a lot more if the wind picks up while racing and No. 2 thereafter , No. 3 is so small ... 30 + knots at least I would reckon , tried it once , so under powered . Have checked boat speed with No. 1 & 2 nothing in it in flat water really , No.2 is still a big sail . However there is still room for the No. 1 to be a fair bit bigger if we wanted to go that way . My crew need to eat more pies ! Doug . |

We sail with 5 to 6 crew all the time and can carry the #1 a long way. We put a lot of effort in to hiking hard and it makes such a difference. The main thing that makes a difference is air temperature we reckon, there seems to be so little pressure in those warm summer winds. Have you seen a boat speed difference in chop though between the two headsails? |

Yeah we had a great time - as Burnham Week was the first event we've done away from home it was good to sail the boat over a bit of a distance. Shame it wasn't windier but with that kite and 3 crew we'd probably have fallen over.

it looks like you were on the edge as it was! although fully crewed i reckon that kite would make for some interesting sailing?

It's certainly big... though on a 3 metre pole I doubt it'd be as quick as our 40sqm asy over most winds. Going broad reach and deeper it'd be faster but it doesn't feel like a very efficient sail if that makes sense

Hi Guys ... a bit sleepy here ? Quiet ?
Oh well, been doing a fair bit of sailing of late. We had an interesting race a couple of weeks back . To a mark 13 miles north then home . Started in a good 4-5 from sw/w , too shy for a kite , thought about trying new assy but we thought we would just get over powered and head out to sea . We had full main and no.2 , we were lying second behind an IMX 38 all the way to mark , he put up small kite and went offshore then reached back in . The wind was building all the time , a couple of miles from the mark we were sitting on 10-14 knots , having fun in the waves , had our first nosedive ... we recovered without too much drama ... bowman was really quick to get his weight back ... and shocked at all the water ! The waves that come over the bow seem to force their way under the front of the closed hatch , is their a cure for this ? We were really closing on the IMX now , at the mark he was less than a couple of hundred metres away , once round the mark it was very different ... a long beat home , we put the first reef in and shortly after the no.3 went up , we were still well overpowered , I was informed that we had a fair bit of water below at the sail change . We carried on , making a bit too much leeway , good speed but were going out to sea , unlike the IMX which seemed well in control . We decided it would be difficult and maybe a little too exciting to try and put the only reef line from the no. 1 point to no.2 so we left it . The wind by now was probably a steady 30 + with severe gusts ( many boats saw 45 and a couple 48 knots ), we by now were pounding into interesting waves , we were all drenched , even me with 5 on the rail in front ! The boat was fine , just over powered most of the time , my storm jib was at home in garage . We soon had one rip in the main leech ... then another ... nearly home , a J29 snuck past inshore , we were in survival mode almost now, the sea really lively , round the last mark and north again into the safety of our harbour . A good day out ! When we moored we found the water below about 3 inches above the floor , 2 of the crew had dead mobiles , a small batt operated lamp fixed to the inner roof was full of water , must have caught a wave in a broach ... still not dry below 2 weeks later . There are areas below the floor in the ribs where you can't get to with the sponge . So this is sailing sportsboats ! never seen so much water in a boat . The main is now fixed and a new one ordered for next season . I found getting to 14 or so knots not a prob but getting towards the magic 20 I think will take a special wave or something ??? Any tips on keeping the sea out ? please ... Also , my pulpitt has seen better days , is it poss to buy a new one ? Doug 7632 |
