hi guys, i recieved this the other day, any thoughts?? Hey Oliver, May I ask you some Questions ? In search of a high performance Sportsboat I randomly could find now the interesting Projection 762. Because I did not find before a Sportsboat of my needs I now build one myself according my ideas of a ideal Sportsboat for tidal Waters : - trailerable - Length about 27" - good upwind performance - very light - variable Draft ( limited Draft because of lofts ) - excellent planing capabilities - also Sportboat requirements according to isra - berths for the crew at least for one night So I choose a modified Version of the Vampir of Dr Segger ; http://www.segger-boote.de/uebersicht.htm Although the Design is based on a Stitch'n glue construction I decided to build this boat in a Fiber - ( S-Glas,Basalt,Carbon-Sandwich-composite ) - Construction. So this may be called a second order stitch n' glue construction. So I'm looking for some details ; for examples the design of the companionway. How does the guideway of the hatch look like? In my design there is very limited space for the sliding hatch cover. How is it solved at the Projection 762 ? Do you have some photos ? If I would have known the Projection 762 I wouldn't have started my own Design. thanks in advance Helmut Hörnle |

Hmmm. It would be very easy to stray off the thread so I'll limit my comments in relation to the P762. Having looked at the pics and spec for the 'Vampir' I can't really see many similarities with the Projection at all... Helmut's criteria are: - trailerable Projection:
If Helmut is so taken with the Projection it's a shame he didn't find out about them before he started his project, but, looking at the boat he is basing his build on it fits his criteria much better than the P762. Apart from the lack of lid, that is! Do you have pics of the companionway you can send him? I suspect that the little entrance to the Projection's sumptious interior is designed to stop those waves breaking over the bow from filling up the boat rather than a lack of space.

Hi Folks, We're planning to try to use our assy kite from time to time for racing (only used it for fun so far). I'm curious to know if anyone is actually rigging so that gybeing is possible without dropping - and if so how and how successful has it been? It's almost inevitable that racing here involves at least one gybe, sometimes two or three... Any info would be appreciated. Chic |

Hi Chic Asy gybing! Perfectly doable on a projection (we do it on Upstart). We often find we have reach to reach gybes in our club courses so it'd be a shame to use a symmetric just to make the gybe easier. Before each race we put our gybing strop on which is just a length of dyneema with one of those Wichard firing blocks on the end that you pull the string on to open. We've got it set to about 30cm above the pulpit which works pretty well. If we have to gybe we put the gybing stop on the tack and take the guy off. We then run the guy around the forestay and clip in on to the clew (we only have single spinnaker lines). The debate is whether to gybe inside our outside. We've tried both (a lot!) and surprisingly inside works best (far too easy to sail over the sheet gybing outside). We then go suddenly deep and the bowman pulls the clew through and we spin the boat. It's essential that the clew is pulled through and down, right down to the life lines. The helm can tweak up to get some air in it and you're away. We then take off the sheet that's now lazy, pop it on the tack, dip the pole to the correct side and fire the snout line. It's very satisfying when it goes right as you can gybe round a wing mark much quicker than with a standard kite. |

Hi Tim, Thanks for that... I suspect that we'll have to try the drill tied up so I can make sense of it. More questions though... I presume that you're attaching the bottom of the gybeing strop to the bow eye; how is it attached and do you leave it on the bow or just attach it for gybes? I'm also presuming that you're using hooks on the sheet ends in order to quickly attach/ detach to kite clew/ tack. I'm a little paranoid of hooks - what kind are you using and have you found them reliable? Cheers, Chic |

We've got these two circular fairleads on the bow and we run the strop through there and tie it around one of the bow cleats. We leave it there and just clip the firing block to the pulpit. I take it off when we're not racing (the block was £40!) but it goes on there before we leave the marina in the morning. We've just got standard piston blocks on the ends of our sheets. They get a lot of silicon sprayed on them regularly so they don't hold us up when we're setting up. It's definitely worth persevering with as with the right wind angle an asy on a projection is dynamite. Noticeably faster than an equivalent size symmetric. |

Hi Guys ,
hav'nt posted for ages but been reading your stuff . We are still progressing ... managed one race win , had loads of close calls also . Did Cowes week ... fantasic fun week but struggled with tides and lack of local knowledge ... found rocks once . Would do it again , would take us many attempts to be near prizes though I suspect . We have an assy now , just been playing with not raced yet, (45M) We run a tack line back to pit , thro fwd deck eye that gib tack goes to . A web strop round pole which we put pole down line thro which then goes to new eyebolt on deck well fwd , this keeps pole down and tight , although tack line does a good job also we have sheet on clew and guy on tack . certainly seems to go v well , have not tried to gybe yet as onlookers have said it will be a a disaster ! well I think we may prove them wrong after what Tim has written , thanks Tim . Will have to try your way soon . Where do you attatch gybing strop to ? Gib tack area I suppose ? sounds like our tack line does same job ? You "run the guy round the forestay" ? should this not be inside if the kite comes inside ? Does your pole not bend a lot ? or do you have it well sucured ? on top of pulpit ? We find we can fly kite pretty well without pole , just not as high . I ended up cutting a slice off bottom of mast so that foot sits pretty flat when raked back in position we now use . We find that upwind in a breeze we are poss just a little faster than the Corks and Melges we race with ... as long as we have plenty of weight on rail, if not we struggle a little ... or a lot ! Am thinking of not replacing old No 1 and using our No. 2 as largest headsail as its only 100 mm less on leech . will gain 9 secs an hour which may help as many of our races are decided by only a few secs . Boat speed seems about the same using either sail . Any comments ? Doug 7632 |
