On the Forth we don't have any option but to race under PY... They have a formula for conversion from IRC but at best it's a compromise. That works from Hobbes' IRC (taken from 2005) rating of .977 to give a PY of 875, though curiously we have been given a rating of 873 based on some data they have from earlier racing. Practically speaking we've found it virtually impossible to sail to this handicap except when it is blowing old boots, and in 'normal' sailing conditions (pre-planing) we usually achieve somewhere nearer 890-900 mark, sometimes even worse.

However PEYC and the Forth Yacht Club Association should now have sufficient data to realise that our handicap isn't a fair reflection of the boat's capabilities, or ours for that matter; but after more than 1000 miles of racing (mostly round the cans) I feel that we're reasonably competent now. Hopefully we'll have a fairer handicap for next year.

If I can find it I'll look out their conversion formula and send it to you, but you might be better to look at data from racing at PEYC where we've had a whole season's sailing...

Same place, same photographer

Sadly not doing Dabbys. Quite gutted but there's always next year. Just
about managed to get Upstart home before the force 6 to 7 turned up.
Never been so fast up the Swin

thats a good one.  shame you cant do dabbys!  what time did you leave burnham on sunday then?  we left at 9, 3 onboard and full main and no1 going through bench head was choppy!  only took 3.5hrs, fair tide beat once round the corner.

nemo must of had a rapid return?

We left at 0530 with 3 on board. No wind at all but plenty of ebb and we burnt lots of fuel. Started sailing once out the Crouch but not very fast.

Wind came in once into the Swin proper and the mothership shot some great film of us coming past at 10kts - coming to youtube very soon. Wind was steady about 20kts with a few decent gusts but we were well tucked up at home before the breeze really came in. Nemo left the boat in Burnham because they're taking it round to Dabbys later in the week I think.

Such a quality week, was really good to meet you guys and the Nemo boys. Have to do more proj on proj stuff next year. Love the facebook videos of your crew shouting soup over the side!

And you got a trophy at the prizegiving too, has anybody been in touch about it?

I was chatting to Mike Harrison (co-chair of SailEast as I'm sure you know) and he said that all the clubs have loads of unawarded trophies kicking around and they'd love to have an East Coast Projection trophy as part of SailEast. We thought of maybe basing it over two weekends - one with sea racing, one with river racing to make it fair for the different preferences.

If we have a chat to our local boats and see how many are up for it Mike is very happy to help us out.

I'm still hurting from the week. I'm pretty sure London Pride are going to give CYC a medal for the amount they sold to me last week.

Your trophy was for second in something, can't remember what!

that sounds good to me, east coast champs would be awesome, 2 from your end, two from mersea and how ever many there are in med and rams?  could be very good!!?

know what you mean about the pain, i cant seem to function without my prestart scrumpy!?

i know but i cant think what we came second in???  we were def 1st in the bar everyday, so it cant be for that!

Nemo boys reckon there is only one other proj racing on the medway now but 6 boats would be sweet. I'm going to talk to White Lightning during our Autumn Series and see if they're up for it.

Your second was something during the week - best email Wendy Eagling about it.
