The Mirror was designed to be home built with a minimum of specialist skills and tools. Unlike many boats you don't need a mold. The panels are stitched together with copper wire to get the shape and then glassfibre tape is used to make the final join. A couple of ply baulkheads then help retain the shape and the deck does the rest. There are no frames and so the construction is quite light and strong. I've owned one and thought it a very responsive little boat. |

The Mirror must be one of the easiest boats to build and has helped many tens of thousands get afloat in a very satisfying manner, and the finished boats sails very well. Here is the build diary of an Australian Mirror : There are plenty of people around who have built Mirrors at home who would be more than happy to share advice. |

And DON'T build it in the dining room before realising that it won't fit through the door or window. As happened to a friend of my father in 1978.

Most definitely - people do it all the time. The big advantage of kits with plywood boats is some of the more tricky wood bashing is done for you. The most troublesome is probably the scarf joints, and that's a job that either needs special tools or a fair bit of practice. The scarf joints are the special taper cut edges that enable you to join two sheets of ply without lumps and bumps. When it comes to home building boats in foam and glass then kits are of minimal advantage and no-one bothers, although the classes that do that sort of thing pass building jigs around.
