Since I'm going to be facing another EPS winter.... I should have done it ages ago since nobody else has, but there's a Facebook Page for the EPS now, a bit easier to go to than the Yahoo group where everyone traditionally gathers.
Like it, or Like it not, it doesn't matter, just the service point for EPS stuff. Thank you for your attention carry on. |

Well I don't mind the wheels concept and think it's a better solution than harsh metal to metal sliders, my old wheels were just corroded in the way alloy corrodes, maybe a plastic composite would have been better, but I've managed to secure a newer Gnav, quite honestly the way the boat is laid out, they could easily have employed a conventional kicker with room to spare, you have to go round the back to tack because of the badly sighted mainsheet controls.
I've tried every option, centre control, rear sheeting, rear sheeting off boom, but have reverted back to centre sheeting and a crude traveller device. Either way a conventional kicker would still function adequately and not get in the way imv |

I was thinking of using it inverted, Jim, with the 'deck' fitting substituted by a standard gnav upper pivot. It was really only the use of the roller car in place of a slider (or the EPS' little wheels) that I was suggesting. Screw the track on top of the boom.

Think about what happens when you let the boom out... You've got to have the lowers for sideways bend anyway. |

Sliding gnavs seem to me to involve a lot of friction when the loads get high. I've spoken to a few Vortex guys who are less than enchanted with theirs (isn't there some talk in the class about allowing conventional kickers?).
Mast struts of the sort that Fireballs (used to?) use to stop bend (*) always look like a good idea for use as a gnav, but I've never seen one used for that. Any ideas why, anyone? |

Graeme,
With the GNAV, I'm going to take a look at fitting a slider rather than having those dodgy looking wheels. In saying that, mine have lasted two years so far and weren't new when I got the boat. I've put a clew slug into the groove on the boom under the gnav wheels and run a cable tie through the metal bits on the wheels, through the slug and tightened it off. That plus some tight shockcord around the boom keeps the gnav from bouncing off the boom. However, I've looked at the slider setup on a Vortex - and a Bahia - and thought: "I reckon that could work..." - so if I could get a cheap Vortex GNAV setup I reckon it'd be worth a try. Other than that, I still love my boat. A challenging git in the gusts on my lake, but on big open water is just a dream. |

Mine has a carbon mast and it's stiff enough with bend at the top for my liking, it does have a bit of a dodgy Gnav, I've since managed to find a newer one which works better. The weak thing imv is the boom, why go to all the expense of a carbon mast then have a crude heavy ally boom.
The racks, they work, at least they did until the storm damaged one of the pins, but they are comfy and slide in and out, the one failing, not enough freeboard which in itself would raise them, so they don't drag if you get gusted and it heels over. Design wise I don't see the need to curve them at either end, needless weight and they impede the controls when set at their innermost setting, something else i'd change. Other than that my love affair continues un abated, I've yet to find anything to equal the fun factor of sailing an EPS, it's borderline edgy, control wise with an extra turn of speed if you are prepared to put the effort in (which I'm not for the most part) 1024 is probably a bit optimistic for lake use, but I have managed to win with it once on the sea and up against the Banditerati in their Merlin, I'm wondering what I could achieve now I'm more used to it and have tweaked it with a new sail and different sheeting system which doesn't get in the way whilst tacking. I tend to have a good battle with a Rooster which sails of 1057 and he beats me, but that's down to his better technique, if I'm on my game, don't make an error I can give him a good run for his money. Saw a shiny EPS over the weekend handicap racing.
Looked a lot nicer than a tatty one I had remembered and seen before. First glance it looked to have carbon mast and boom with a knav kicker, was this original or perhaps I wasn't looking closely enough, really annoyed now that didn't have a chance to speak to the owner. Sail looked different as well quite a high aspect sail plan, laminate and looked as if a dacron luff section. Hull form looked to be running nicely in very gusty lake conditions, wings did still look clumsy though.
