I have a pair of carbon landing net handles which do the trick nicely.. and for £6.50 each you cant go too far wrong. Compared to a 'real' extension they are definantly more flexy and probibly a lot less durable but ive not had any problems yet and for that price I can afford to carry a spare. For a guide to all the various tiller extension options available (including a couple that should never be attempted again except in very dire circumstances) and a quick description of how to build your own, see below... CFS are another good supplier for this sort of stuff.
50 mm X 100 meters of peel ply around £20 : clicky They will do specific amounts if you ask or you can order over the web if you want. + they operate like a normal retail business and not like anything you normally have to deal with when dealing with the sailing industry ( you know - no one returns your emails, phone calls, they never order it, it doesn't turn up, it's the wrong one, they charge you a different price etc. etc.) ![]() |

If he gets it wrong, the copper tube will never come out, and then it will be plenty strong enough... |

I'm going to make a test one first, something about the size of a N12 tiller extension. I will let you know how it goes and send u a pic!

I am going to use one layer of carbon/kevlar sock, then a layer of carbon/glass sock over the top of that, they are fairly thick. The reason I#m using the carbon/glass sock is that it gives a bit of flex which stops it snapping, and you can get it in really funky colours, im making a black and orange one. I'm going to get some sent over from USA, I can't seem to find any over here. Once on the copper pipe, I will cover it with the correct amount of resin and peel ply it. Simple. I think....

a carbon/ glass sock? how thick are these? also, if its only one layer wont it be a bit easy to break? where do you get them? by 'wet it out' i assume you mean cover it all in resin? would mine need to be beefier as it gets whacked on the deck each tack when i cross/ drag/ fall my way to the other side of the boat. |

I am going to make mine with a copper tube mandrell (22mm) coating it in wax and heating it to get it off. I was going to use carbon/glass sock to slide over the tube, then wet it out. The peel ply goes over the top under tension to squeeze out excess resin and make sure there are no bubbles and give a textured finish to grip onto. Once cured it gets peeled off.

i was thinking of making a longer extension for my rs300. i was planning on using copper piping for the mould and putting wax on it so when im done i can heat it up, the wax will melt and i can get the pipe out. i was thinking of using a roll of carbon cloth type material. but what does the peel ply do? and when would you apply it? |
