Hi,

I need to get a roll of peel ply, about 1 inch wide. I will need about 10 meters. Any idea where I can get this from? I have googled it without much success. I am making tiller extensions btw.

Cheers

Tom

I got some from
http://www.mcmc-uk.com/ - http://www.mcmc-uk.com/

They also do some moderatly skin friendly resins

Edit: By this I mean that they are less damaging than other than some other epoxy resin. Gloves Must always be used when working with Irritants like Epoxy!

I presume thats the same stuff, I only know it's called peel ply! Is the surface tape for absorbing excess resin from making carbon stuff?

Go and walk about town for a while untill you find a fabric shop and ask for dress/suit lining material, then cut/tear your own strips.

Its effectively the same material and works in exactly the same way... but its cheeper, easier to get hold off and comes in all sorts of pretty colours! genious!

Failing that, as Granite suggested: http://www.mcmc-uk.com/ - http://www.mcmc-uk.com/ would be my first port off call.

What's wrong with wearing gloves? Seriously kids, just wear gloves. Sensitisation is really nasty- you may not even be able to be in the same room as liquid epoxy if it happens. Seriously. Don't gamble- it'll happen pretty suddenly, and without warning.

Thats a good idea, the thing is I need a thin roll to make it neat. I guess they would sell that stuff on rolls? I shall look!

Give Mike at Aardvark a shout, he might have some kicking about he would sell you. Or failing that, http://www.carbonology.com//shop_det.asp?pf_id=83&pd_id= 16018&pc_id=3202&sec_id=2116

I normally  wear two pairs of Nitrile gloves and sometimes barrier cream when working with epoxy as you can then take one pair off for cleanup but still be protected.
However no matter how careful you are it is difficult to guarantee that you will never touch partially cured epoxy on surfaces.

The resins that Matrix sell have been recommended to me by someone who suffers from sensitization as not causing problems for him, whereas with normal protection he has problems with other resins.

I have found less irritation when sanding laminate made using Sincomin resins than with laminate made using other resins.

And I often wear gloves when sanding.

Full protection is vital as you say and I probably phrased my initial post incorrectly.

Often at work I find that thicker gloves, in fact, yer washing up-style "marigolds" (we actually use Marigold brand gloves) are best for the really sticky stuff- nitrile gloves can be easily ripped.

i was thinking of making a longer extension for my rs300. i was planning on using copper piping for the mould and putting wax on it so when im done i can heat it up, the wax will melt and i can get the pipe out.

i was thinking of using a roll of carbon cloth type material. but what does the peel ply do? and when would you apply it?

I am going to make mine with a copper tube mandrell (22mm) coating it in wax and heating it to get it off. I was going to use carbon/glass sock to slide over the tube, then wet it out. The peel ply goes over the top under tension to squeeze out excess resin and make sure there are no bubbles and give a textured finish to grip onto. Once cured it gets peeled off.

a carbon/ glass sock? how thick are these? also, if its only one layer wont it be a bit easy to break? where do you get them?

by 'wet it out' i assume you mean cover it all in resin?

would mine need to be beefier as it gets whacked on the deck each tack when i cross/ drag/ fall my way to the other side of the boat.

I am going to use one layer of carbon/kevlar sock, then a layer of carbon/glass sock over the top of that, they are fairly thick. The reason I#m using the carbon/glass sock is that it gives a bit of flex which stops it snapping, and you can get it in really funky colours, im making a black and orange one. I'm going to get some sent over from USA, I can't seem to find any over here. Once on the copper pipe, I will cover it with the correct amount of resin and peel ply it. Simple. I think....

If he gets it wrong, the copper tube will never come out, and then it will be plenty strong enough...

CFS are another good supplier for this sort of stuff.
50 mm X 100 meters of peel ply around £20  : http://www.cfsnet.co.uk/cgi-local/sh000001.pl?REFPAGE=http%3a%2f%2fwww%2ecfsnet%2eco%2euk%2facatalog%2fWoven_Glassibre_Cloths%2ehtml&WD=peel%20ply&PN=Peel_Ply%2ehtml%23a610#a610 - clicky

They will do specific amounts if you ask or you can order over the web if you want.

+ they operate like a normal retail business and not like anything you normally have to deal with when dealing with the sailing industry ( you know - no one returns your emails, phone calls, they never order it, it doesn't turn up, it's the wrong one, they charge you a different price etc. etc.)

I have a pair of carbon landing net handles which do the trick nicely.. and for £6.50 each you cant go too far wrong. Compared to a 'real' extension they are definantly more flexy and probibly a lot less durable but ive not had any problems yet and for that price I can afford to carry a spare.

For a guide to all the various tiller extension options available (including a couple that should never be attempted again except in very dire circumstances) and a quick description of how to build your own, see below...
