I'm bloody race officer this weekend, probably call it off, it's been gusting 30 offshore since thursday, better to go windsurfing.

Oh yes, it's not often in these islands the forecast for a weekend looks so bl**dy good for a weekend can't wait!! Good luck all more time on the water less in front of the screen

Cheers Nick - yep Taxi sent me a very detailed tuning sheet, I haven't got around to fiddling yet- 'whack the stick up and go sailing... Try not to miss the start' has been about as technical as I've got so far. When I get a spare evening I will run a tape up the halyard and figure out what's going on.

I will take your point about trim though- I think I was definitely sitting a bit back off wind (and in the light stuff upwind)

Loads to learn and I'm enjoying that aspect of it immensely.

James, surely how many holes down you were depends on the length of your shrouds and forestay! The key measurements are the mast foot position and rake. Many of the Solo sail makers have guides, as I am sure you know. P&B's is one of the more detailed. http://www.pinbax.com/docs/Solo%20Tuning%20Guide.pdf

I'm sure your sail will have the leach streamers Getafix recommends. I'm no expert but I find the key Solo points down wind are a) little kicker , especially if it is light; b) keep the weight off the stern; and c) take the mainsheet directly off the front boom block so you can react instantly to a gust - worth several boat lengths.

I was on hole 3 down, which felt quite tight once the wind had dropped off.  

I haven't measured the rake or settings yet... on the 'to do' list, along with rowing-off 10kg of blubber with a Concept 2 between now and the end of the year.

if it wasn't that windy I be surprised if you're battens were inverted around the shrouds, IIRC Solo's tend to run with practically no shroud tension anyhow, so quite surprised to hear your leeward shroud would be in contact with the sail to that extent at all....

cheers Getafix...  I noticed one of the guys had old school 'woolies' on his shrouds too.  He was very quick... took back his +6 minutes and still won the race.  He's quite good mind... 

One thing I noticed, inverted battens around the shrouds... not fast, no?  Best to bring the sail in a bit, add a little height and get some apparent wind working and bear off again????

FWIW become obsessed with your kicker settings downwind, get a streamer on the end of the top batten and the next one down and possibly extra tell-tails, watch 'em like a hawk.  I started this a few years ago after talking to one guy who continually overtook me downwind and then we would swap blows upwind, he usually won.  It doesn't work out all the time, but may be a good anecdote to the 'dreaded' sub-planing reach syndrome, it was for me.  IIRC there used to be an excellent bit of Ed Bairds Laser book about this and I've applied it to all sorts of single-handers since giving up on the L*ser for ever a good while ago....

we had a 'personal handicap' day in the Solo fleet yesterday.  It wouldn't be something I'd want all the time, but it was a good laugh for a one off... and everyone took it in the right spirit.

It was pursuit based, so positive start times from +0 to +6.5 minutes.  I was on +2 with two other newbies.    

I managed to win both windward marks catching up the guy who started on 0, and held the lead for the first lap.  It was a challenging breeze with marks set in the lee of the shore, and over the period of both races I managed to loose the ground.  A couple of 'unlucky gusts' on the reaches saw the fast guys at the back catch us up and close the gap- the final push into the lead came from their expert upwind dispatch reading the shifts right (or more importantly me, and some others, reading them wrong).  

It was an interesting lesson in 'clean air', the first lap of the first race actually saw me open up a lead according to my stopwatch, only 20 seconds more or so, but they certainly didn't close in from the off... this came later, probably when I lost concentration in the difficult sections, the sinking feeling having set in when they chattering up, planing behind me on a reach and I was sat one leg to leeward to balance the boat.  

I'm not sure where I finished in the end... will post back when the results go out later.
