OK what you do is this..... get a bucket or two of seaweed, boil for a couple of hours on high, get one clothes peg, apply clothes peg to nose, drink as much seaweed juice as possible, descend into a deep psycho- tropic state, see the future and foretell the weather.... see it's simple. Or alternatively hang some seaweed by your door and if its crispy it will be fine if its soft it will be raining soon. Old salty sea dog fisher mans tip thingy.... apparently. |

And get lace-seaweed in the centreboard casing and you can't lift the blade going downwind! Arrgh!!!! That's a perfect way to predict a short, brutal spell of extremely wet conditions for the sailor....

Yes. From http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A641305 "Certain types of seaweed can be used to measure the humidity. In the UK there is a type called lace seaweed5, a single, long strand of seaweed, looking a lot like a bootlace. Hang this up in a sheltered area and as the humidity rises the seaweed becomes damp, slimey and pliant, as humidity drops it becomes hard and brittle." The only snag with this is it didn't predict the weather; it just told you what was already happening. |

Seaweed! If it pops when you squeeze it and you can hear it it is something like high pressure!!
I cant remember properly but give it a try and see if it works |

Jack, you've GOT to tell us! Is seaweed-gazing an ancient weather-divination lore? Please tell us before Sunday, so we can give it a go at the sailing club!

www.metoffice.com, www.onlineweather.com, www.xcweather.co.uk and www.windwatcher.net are the ones I use and they seem pretty good. If we are running a big event I also phone the Coastguard and monitor channel 16. |
