Thanks for the reply Mark.  I guess there is more to this magazine malarky than meets the eye.

I suppose that the result of having to pay for ads is that only decent boats are put up for sale.  Your less likely to pay to advertise cheaper and undesirable boats.  I seem to remember not too long ago that that the cheap section in the Y&Y ads was for £400 and less.  Now its £1000 and there's still hardly any!  Either second hand prices have shot up or Y&Y has gone upmarket.

The "news" thing is interesting.  I didn't realise that there was such a thing as marketing partners.  Shows how much I know...

Y&Y is still the best.

The other advantage of the Y&Y classifieds as ive noticed trying to buy a boat recently is many of the ads on the free sites were sold long ago and just havnt been removed. With Y&Y you know the boat was still for sale a maximum of two issues (I think thats the ad length?) ago.

Id also echo TTs comments that I have more confidance buying and selling through Y&Y.

Hardly harsh TT  - as I said in my post above I think the balance is good here.

It's a fine line on the news articles and I think most of the advertisers get it right.

I have to say I think Rooster probably do the best job with their stories which usually carry some useful information as well as having a commercial slant.

This is an excellent example of a good commercial news item.

It is informative to the reader and no doubt meets Roosters needs to ... this is an area to provide feedback and mine is if more advertisers posted their items like Rooster it would be better for all ...

Rick

PS Apart from their SHLT of course ...

An interesting thread.

1. Classifieds that go online are just an extention of the magazine classified advertising - it seems that this one has been answered very well by other readers.

2. News articles from advertisers is how we bring marketing partners on board. Simple banner advertising just doesn't bring in the revenue needed to run a site like YachtsandYachting.com . It would be a simple case of no advertising news articles = no YachtsandYachting.com . It is a delicate balance, which is why we have limited the number of marketing partners to 20. The simple thing is if you don't want to read an advertising news article from a marketing partner then don't click on it. Many people seem to though and find the offers and information on them really quite good!

Feel free to continue discussing this - we really like hearing the feedback and watching the debate develop.

Yes, WAY too many "News" articles are just adverts for new products or "Purple Tuesday"

I guess people like Rooster / Purple Marine have to pay to get that sort of exposure?

Out of interest how is the "news" chosen on this site, I understand the results from the various racing being on there, but there does seem to be a lot of stuff that are basicaly adverts whichever way you look at it.

Not complaining just curious.

Okay, okay, okay.  I'll pay for my classified ad.

I quite agree about the number of 'news' items though.

Everything has to be paid for one way or another - would you rather have this site splattered with ads & pop-ups or pay a little?

I think the balance here is good - a little advertising on the site but not too much (but there are perhaps too many ads that appear as news - JMHO).

Yup, TT's a prime example: he wasn't quite himself before he joined the forum. As BWD's spiritual son, his life is complete!
