But how often do people pay the same amount for the same kit? I doubt many of the front half of a championship laser fleet will be using sails more than a season old

Chequebook sailing implies that whoever can sheel out the most cash to buy better kit wins. With SMODs, everyone pays the same amount for the same kit, however extortionate the prices are.

Dump Laser and buy from Rooster, they told me exactly what I could and couldn't get on the insurance claim :-) (as well as being very friendly and helpful in to the bargain).

Just to point out I have no connection with Rooster Sailing aside from being a happy customer!

Hector's right. Its a question of "you get what you pay for" and all the promotion and marketing and so on is part of what you pay for. It ought to keep up the value of secondhand boats and so on, so its in your interest that they do it.

OK, in the less manufacturer driven classes we don't have to pay for that stuff, but it means we don't get it either and it affects the demand for boats etc

May be best to purchase a set of training sails, and only use the laser ones for racing!

Laser are expensive - not sure that makes them a rip off.

They have to pay for flashy Boat Show stands, high cost of several staff, high stock levels, large premises, huge marketing effort with expensive advertising and so on. That could explain why they charge more than  most but doesn't explain why RS sails are cheaper.

They did for Laser 2000 sails. They had a boat show special/class association deal. I got a new genny for £70 less.

Worth asking the L4k class to neogatiate a similar deal?
