Sailing is as expensive as you make it. Last year I spent less than £500 including one inland national championships. I spent around £4000 buying and doing up my Solo and I expect to sail it for many years to come, only spending sub £50 a year on boat maintenance.

I bought my first brand-new boat aged 50, and it will see me out. Plus an early Winder Solo. New sail coming courtesy of a group collaboration, which is a huge discount. Group together and buy in bulk!

Don't have a budget but I do have a standing order that sticks a set amount monthly into a "sailing and travel fund" account that I raid when it comes to paying the credit card bill and it's showing lots of holiday, fuel or sailing expenses.
Average this year on sailing would not look good as I decided the bank interest was worse than the personal interest I'd get from buying and sailing a three year old Albacore. But that's the most I've ever spent on a boat - they usually cost two bottles of wine! |

Not bad considering the amount of travelling you mention.

Difficult to generalise, as some years I've bought new boats and planned several holidays around sailing events. At the moment I'm between "proper" boats so just using my daughters old Laser for a few club events, and the cost of that is next to nothing. Say £250 a year including club subs, insurance, and the occasional bit of string. Depreciation pretty much nil. Probably double that this year as I've bought a new sail. I guess it just shows that you while you can buy expensive boats if you want, dinghy racing can be cheaper than most sports.

Been intrigued at what it costs me per year for a while so made a spread sheet tonight
Boat costs (insurance/repairs for 3 boats 1 boat is shared) - £672 Entry Fees for 14 events this is just my share- £355 Fuel for the 14 events, my share £361 Accomodation for the 5 events plus a week for the nationals, my share - £590 Extras; membership fees and paying for dinner when someone put us up for the evening- £195 In total it was £2173 total for the year, round it to £2200 by the time I do the Grafham Grand prix, making it £183.33 per month Edited by ClubRacer - 18 Dec 19 at 10:10pm |

Membership of three sailing clubs, £30 per year. Boat Insurance (two boats) ~£300. sails-bought nearly new s/h for both classes last 5 years. A low few hundreds over the year for ropes, gloves etc. Nothing for burgees by avoiding capsizes!

Base monthly costs are about £60 a month . Which is great value considering , it’s for my wife and I and the amount time we spend at the sailing club.
This doesn’t include the odd big expenditure like my urge to buy a different boat or my wife’s love of new sails.
