Subject: What’s your monthly sailing budget
Date Posted: 17 Dec 19 at 12:34am
It’s the time of year where I have to take a bit of time out to do some accounting and I checked out my sailing budget for the last 12 months.
Everything spent on sailing from books to blocks to b&bs to beer all in one category.
I race a Winder mk4 Merlin and this was a season where I bought new north sails but didn’t travel to any regattas due to getting married.
£215 p/m
I’ve improved a bit. Not as much as I’d like more hard work for next season
How does your budget look?

Probably half that amount, but I would have easily reached it if I had gone to Europeans in Belgium, only got old boats though.

That's far too organised and scary for me. Does it include club membership?

It’s really not so hard. These days you can get an app to do all the hard work for you..

I have a caravan on a seasonal pitch in Anglesey, if I worked out how much a night it's costing me I'd probably stop going...... so I don't keep a record. Sailing is much the same. What is more important is 'cost per use', how much has each days sailing cost you.
Oh, and beer doesn't count 'cos I'd drink that anyway

I haven't counted beer either, 2 nights away sailing probably 50 quid, add food probably another 50 quid.

I am lucky to live in a town with two sailing clubs so I get out sailing a great deal.
So if I was sailing once a week that would be £4.06 per sail but sometimes in the summer there are three races a week and we try to train as well..
That’s starting to look like value for money.

My lowest total boat running cost spend was when I had a beaten up 20 year old Laser I sailed on Wednesday nights. Other than the cost of buying it, I spent a grand total of about £30 on it most years.
That was £4 ish on rope, £1 for half a can of Screwfix silicone lube spray, and £25 for third party insurance.
All rather insignificant in comparison to the hundreds of pounds in running costs for the car getting to and from the club, which was about 25 miles away.
These days, I'd guess on typical annual running costs for the Streaker, including a new sail every 2-3 years is somewhere around £500. Many people spend more than that on a mobile phone contract, and a lot less than a football season ticket.

Value of a full on three sail spinny reach ? Priceless.
Relax and enjoy it!

Just me factoring out additional cost of daughters fleet storage so fees, maintenance and depreciation of the boat probably £50 - a figure I would like to increase!

I've also owned big boats for the last 20 years and know that whatever dinghy sailing costs, it's relatively inexpensive in comparison. Since I daren't calculate big boat cost (which on a cost per usage basis would only look worse), I'm certainly not going to calculate dinghy cost.

My ex brother in law, does no sport at all, he does however, smoke, drink and gamble, costs a lot more than my sailing, kayaking and cycling, not forgetting surfing.

I’m not trying to justify the amount. I love sailing and budget for it according to my ambitions. This season will include a pretty decent refit that’s under way, some new sails and a lot more travelling to STs and, I think most importantly a lot of training and some coaching.
Better start putting the hours in at work

Base monthly costs are about £60 a month . Which is great value considering , it’s for my wife and I and the amount time we spend at the sailing club.
This doesn’t include the odd big expenditure like my urge to buy a different boat or my wife’s love of new sails.

Membership of three sailing clubs, £30 per year. Boat Insurance (two boats) ~£300. sails-bought nearly new s/h for both classes last 5 years. A low few hundreds over the year for ropes, gloves etc. Nothing for burgees by avoiding capsizes!

Been intrigued at what it costs me per year for a while so made a spread sheet tonight
Boat costs (insurance/repairs for 3 boats 1 boat is shared) - £672 Entry Fees for 14 events this is just my share- £355 Fuel for the 14 events, my share £361 Accomodation for the 5 events plus a week for the nationals, my share - £590 Extras; membership fees and paying for dinner when someone put us up for the evening- £195
In total it was £2173 total for the year, round it to £2200 by the time I do the Grafham Grand prix, making it £183.33 per month

Difficult to generalise, as some years I've bought new boats and planned several holidays around sailing events. At the moment I'm between "proper" boats so just using my daughters old Laser for a few club events, and the cost of that is next to nothing. Say £250 a year including club subs, insurance, and the occasional bit of string. Depreciation pretty much nil. Probably double that this year as I've bought a new sail. I guess it just shows that you while you can buy expensive boats if you want, dinghy racing can be cheaper than most sports.

Not bad considering the amount of travelling you mention.

Don't have a budget but I do have a standing order that sticks a set amount monthly into a "sailing and travel fund" account that I raid when it comes to paying the credit card bill and it's showing lots of holiday, fuel or sailing expenses. Average this year on sailing would not look good as I decided the bank interest was worse than the personal interest I'd get from buying and sailing a three year old Albacore. But that's the most I've ever spent on a boat - they usually cost two bottles of wine!

I bought my first brand-new boat aged 50, and it will see me out. Plus an early Winder Solo. New sail coming courtesy of a group collaboration, which is a huge discount. Group together and buy in bulk!

Sailing is as expensive as you make it. Last year I spent less than £500 including one inland national championships. I spent around £4000 buying and doing up my Solo and I expect to sail it for many years to come, only spending sub £50 a year on boat maintenance.
