It does work on a Phantom as well, showed my pal how to totally smoke lasers downwind doing it. It works because it slackens the shrouds on what was the lee side, the boom then swings further foward which takes up the slack and brings the mast back nearly where it should be but with the kicker dumped the top of the sail is ahead so you get a bit of flow reversal and can run by the lee, it gets a bit hairy when its very windy, but in light to medium is very effective. |

couldn't agree more - and it doesn't matter how technical or difficult the boat is either. The Musto Skiff class are extremely welcoming to newcomers, which is why I guess they have seen the level of organic growth and sailor development which is beyond admirable.

Friendships help too. A nationals ain't the same of your friends have shipped class, however it can be counterproductive of the class becomes cliquey. The incumbents need to ensure that newcomers are made welcome. This happens in the phantoms. I remember being chatted to by the national champ at my first nats which wouldn't have happened in some classes. Makes a huge difference

My new Minisail will be on the water soon!
It takes a few people with enthusiasm to get a class going, but a much bigger pool of willing and enthusiastic people to keep it going long term. The Solo is a great example of the latter, and I think they have managed this by being very professional in their approach. |

Minisail Class almost stopped functioning since Rupert taken a back seat, so we can't rule out personalities and their influence and organisational skills on Nationals attendance.

Its simple - age issues ! When you start forgetting these things its clearly time to face the inevitable and order that Solo The OK was lovely but I found I was always searching for power - probably just comparing it to the Finn (when most of the time you're trying to get rid of the power) Will definitely try the OK again at some point - if I can remember it ! |

Yeah the top of the mast will rake a bit but with the twist in the sail because of letting the kicker off plus the boom pushing the shroud forward allows the boat to run deeper. It does work on a phantom so no reason why it won't on a solution.

Depends how windy it is Jim. It shouldn't make any difference if the breeze is enough to make the shrouds tight but I think iGRF is saying to get the boom out without adjusting the shrouds he lets the forestay off - that implies the rig raking back to slacken the shrouds. No new laws needed

If letting the forestay off makes the mast rake back on a run then I want some new laws of physics!
