depends on your perspective.... assuming it's tax payer money* and it's going to get spent on a.n.other sport anyway, then no.

If it's tax payer money that could be re-allocated into schools and hospitals.... well that's another question entirely.

* and before any raises this, the National Lottery is just another tax.

By not unreasonable value, I meant the the money they spend for what they actually do. Whether what they do has value is another question  Wink

It's indeed a voluntary tax for the lower echelons of society.

I also pay those taxes you cite- out of equal obligation to your good self.

Somewhere further up the food chain it seems they also become somewhat voluntary too....

Well...
21 support staff, 19 full time coaches.
24 Sailors in the Podium squad (fully funded with training camps, ISAF world cup events etc)
31 Sailors in the Podium Potential squad (fully funded, but a bit less, with all the same)
the fleet of support vans, RIBS etc.

Then the lower levels of the olympic pathway all have their own funding requirements for coaches, equipment etc (although the sailors do contribute at the lower levels).

It works out at roughly 69k budget per year per person if you work it out by the headcount on their website only.

Doesn't seem that unreasonable value if you ask me...  Don't think anyone's getting minted!

5 events with 3 medals each is 15 medals. So the return is more like 6% (assuming all medals to be equal)  Wink

It seems NZ have a budget of about £9m for Tokyo.  Australia spent about £18m on sailing at Rio.

Anyhoo, given that the average sailing squaddie/coach/analyst/bosun/mind coach/what ever can't be on much more than £40k (£100 a day), the travel and subsistence bill must be pretty hefty at Team GB to rack up £18,000 a day costs!  I wonder how much other countries are spending on trying to win at sailing?
