I've mentioned this a few times on other threads, but decided to make one for it.

UK Sport has given RYA £26 million for the run up to Tokyo 2020. I would like to know where does that money all go?

* Olympic only sailors / squads / coaches
* Grass roots sailing - e.g sailing schools
* Sailing clubs
* somewhere else?

I would love to know how much is passed down to sailing clubs which are the mainstay of the whole thing. Without clubs and passionate members, top sailors would unlikely be where they are.

I would love to see a scheme where clubs can develop into semi-professional clubs e.g paid staff to offer extra facilities/courses/events to encourage more memebers + keep exisiting members engaged.
Also to help clubs that might still be based out of huts/portacabins etc into purpose built sailing clubs - its hardly a positive advert for sailing when someone turns up to a run down shed and no hot water in the showers.

It's cash for medals.
Nothing to do with ordinary people taking part in recreational sport.
They want GBR to look good in the medal table and they think sailing is worth a punt.

All that tulip about grants is all very well, but turning all the clubs into handout monkeys soon goes sour when the tap gets turned off.

Funding for grass roots sailing comes from Sport England (and their equivalents in the other nations of the UK).

Some of this goes to the RYA - see  http://www.rya.org.uk/newsevents/news/Pages/rya-response-to-.aspx" rel="nofollow - http://www.rya.org.uk/newsevents/news/Pages/rya-response-to-.aspx

But individual clubs can also apply directly for funding from Sport England - see  http://www.sportengland.org/funding/new-funding-when-to-apply/" rel="nofollow - https://www.sportengland.org/funding/new-funding-when-to-apply/

I believe quite a number of sailing clubs have received support for various building projects of the type you suggest.

Worth noting the £26m over a four year cycle is £18k a day, including Sundays.  Would be interesting to know how that is spent.  Especially as badminton gets sweet fa over the same period.

Is that Badminton the horsey thing, or Badminton batting a pretend dead chicken over a net?

I believe that its badminton *failing* to bat the pretend dead chicken, which AIUI is why they lost their share of the dosh.

There were 5 badminton events and the UK got a one medal.  20% return ain't bad...

Anyhoo, given that the average sailing squaddie/coach/analyst/bosun/mind coach/what ever can't be on much more than £40k (£100 a day), the travel and subsistence bill must be pretty hefty at Team GB to rack up £18,000 a day costs!  I wonder how much other countries are spending on trying to win at sailing?

It seems NZ have a budget of about £9m for Tokyo.  Australia spent about £18m on sailing at Rio.

5 events with 3 medals each is 15 medals. So the return is more like 6% (assuming all medals to be equal) Wink

Well...
21 support staff, 19 full time coaches.
24 Sailors in the Podium squad (fully funded with training camps, ISAF world cup events etc)
31 Sailors in the Podium Potential squad (fully funded, but a bit less, with all the same)
the fleet of support vans, RIBS etc.

Then the lower levels of the olympic pathway all have their own funding requirements for coaches, equipment etc (although the sailors do contribute at the lower levels).

It works out at roughly 69k budget per year per person if you work it out by the headcount on their website only.

Doesn't seem that unreasonable value if you ask me...  Don't think anyone's getting minted!

depends on your perspective.... assuming it's tax payer money* and it's going to get spent on a.n.other sport anyway, then no.

If it's tax payer money that could be re-allocated into schools and hospitals.... well that's another question entirely.

* and before any raises this, the National Lottery is just another tax.

Lottery is not just another tax. Voluntary versus compulsory. I've never played the lottery and never will. Tax on the other hand. I pay income tax, corporation tax, value added tax, fuel tax, council tax..........

It's indeed a voluntary tax for the lower echelons of society.

I also pay those taxes you cite- out of equal obligation to your good self.

Somewhere further up the food chain it seems they also become somewhat voluntary too....

Maybe make all tax a bit more like the lottery - a free premium bond or lotto ticket with every hundred quid tax paid. :-)

By not unreasonable value, I meant the the money they spend for what they actually do. Whether what they do has value is another question Wink
