They've been wearing helemts from the get-go with the AC45s. Things I really don't want to have to consider- I think that pipe over his right shoulder may be his emergency air supply.

I suspect that is his camel back for a drink ...

(as a side note- are they wearing wetsuits like they do on the 45s on the 72s, or something a bit closer to normal yacht gear?)

So now, who is ahead of his time as usual?

F1 drivers have been wearing helmets, neck braces and fire proof suits for years; do you wear one when you drive your car?

See the other thread; the RRS does not specify what a PFD is ...

I bought it for windsurfing, where my speeds are already knock on 30 knots and the masts break when you hit them causing nasty carbon shards, hence I find some need for protection, including a gecko surf helmet if it's windy (big gheyer...  no doubt).   I have found some use in dinghy sailing as it's so low profile I can now tack without releasing a kicker, only discovered when I hadn't packed my BA in my kit a week or so ago...

I think I'll continue to use it, not because it makes me look cool or feel macho in my lilac decked solo, more because less bulk is good.  I'm expecting the Rule 2 hearing in due course, I won't be attending.

But I agree the bottom two look like non-IYRU compliant 'float coats' rather than impact vests.... I wouldn't want either of those two.

Hmmm ... all very similar to my eye ... anyway call them what you will but it seems most sensible to wear an item that stops you sinking to the seabed whilst sailing.

Didn't Gill make one of these a few years ago?

If they also can "spread the impact and to protect your internal organs from shearing damage (internal bleeding)" plus make you feel more macho at the same time then it is win win  Wink

What are the rules currently for buoyancy aids and would these "crash vests" measure up?
