Stick the kite up!!

My boat (an F18) is much safer downwind with the kite up no matter how strong the wind is.

At F8 though it is time to have a beer rather than go sailing

Agreed if you are running downing hoiking up the kite helps lift the bow and stops submarine moments.......

that's why rooster sell a bullet proof carbon tiller extension- you ain't gonna lose a fight blugeoning someone with one of them!

I beg to differ, In a scorp, fireball and other symetrically rigged boats the crews have a spinaker pole to retaliate with.

We used to have that problem in the fireball. Not sure if it will work so well in the scorp, bt try chucking the kite up and going on two broad reaches. Obviously the scorp dosent have trapeze, but when its blowing, my crew raises himself as high as possible on the wire and i steer to keep him out there, tryin to as low as possible, the rough angle to gybe at was when i saw the leward mark appear behind the main. It also reduces the risk of death rolling. This only seems to work when its really blowing, as we can sail lower and we gain by not buring ourselves in the waves. Hope thats of some use.
