seems the RAC only cover trailers if they and the car are less than 6.4m long .... unless I join the camping and caravaning club and tell them my membership number.
What do people do?

6.4m as a combined rig length limit is completely useless. Are you sure that’s not just the trailer length? Could be due to their flatbed truck load limit, I guess. But, if the towing vehicle is u/s they load that on the truck and tow the trailer, so what difference does the trailer length make?

Join the AA! 😉
Had a couple of breakdowns over the years and on the one occasion they needed to tow they put the car on a low loader and towed the boat, no questions asked |

Yep, the length limit is car and trailer unless you are a member of the caravan and camping club at which point they upgrade you to arrival membership which does not have this limit.

Join the camping and caravan club. Discounts on many things mean you can quickly make the spend back. If you travel by ferry you can be up significantly: at Easter our Motorhome goes to Holland for the price of a car and the Rib trailer goes for free!

I've been recovered by the AA before a couple of times when I was towing my 6 metre caravan. They put the car on the low loader and towed the caravan No issues, other than the AA sending out a low loader to recover me rather than a standard patrol van but that was their concern and cost not mine. BTW 6.4 metres is, I think, the maximum legal length limit in the UK for caravans so might have caused some confusion.

Even with my freebie breakdown cover with my bank account trailers are covered but must be less than 6.4m (just the trailer).

I ditched the AA for my camper van insurer's breakdown cover (Adrian Flux) since the price including European cover for our two vehicles was half that of the AA which didn't include European cover.
We tow an Albacore so Transit van (5.95 metres) plus at least 16ft of boat and trailer plus mast overhang,
Last year we had a fan belt pulley go on the M6 and the breakdown service was excellent. No sending out a patrol to try roadside fixing, just straight out with a recovery lorry which was happy to tow the boat and relayed us to near Birmingham where we were swapped to another lorry with less than 30 minutes delay and then all brought home to Wiltshire. Lorries had adjustable height towbars and helpful friendly drivers. I'll be renewing that policy! |
