As no one actually calls it that in real life, they may just be bowing to common usage.

Not my cup of tea, but my Brother in law loves his, and certainly isn't a sailing god, just someone who wanted a challenge and doesn't mind getting very, very wet!

As well as time, there has to be a willingness to take a few steps backwards in terms of where you are on the sailing learning curve, as there is no doubt they aren't easy to sail.

I do wonder sometimes if I got in one now, with the benefit of the considerable number of hours I've spent and knowledge accrued in my menagerie of craft since, wether I could make one go, I think I'd still be screwed over 15-18 knots upwind, but I know a bit about kickers and lifting plates and stuff I wasn't that familiar with then. Not that it would make launching the biatch off the beach and recovering it any easier with that sticky rudder and daggerboard and I've seen much much better sailors than me come to grief with busted masts and stuff doing precisely that, but it's interesting the world has moved away from the concept at least round our way.
