So Musto have dropped the word 'Performance' from their Skiff officially according to the class newsletter, I don't suppose they will be replacing it with the words 'impossible' or 'difficult' or 'extreme' even, but I guess it's a step in the right direction...

As no one actually calls it that in real life, they may just be bowing to common usage.

Not my cup of tea, but my Brother in law loves his, and certainly isn't a sailing god, just someone who wanted a challenge and doesn't mind getting very, very wet!

Both the Musto & 700 are great boats.....you just have to be willing to put the time in!!!!

As well as time, there has to be a willingness to take a few steps backwards in terms of where you are on the sailing learning curve, as there is no doubt they aren't easy to sail.

Its just Musto branding isn't it? They used to brand as Musto Performance when the boat came out eg https://web.archive.org/web/20071011093350/http://www.musto.com/
then I think they dropped the Performance, and currently their web site says Musto Ocean Engineered. I think though that Musto Ocean Engineered Skiff lacks that certain ring, plus Trading Standards might get involved...

So Performance was related to Musto, not the boat.

Does anyone know where they got the skiff from?

It was a trendy word at the time.

The boat is German, it is a translation of Musto performance Schiff.

and when middle age german lake sailors start describing wooden contenders as them, you know, deep down, that trend is well and truly over....

I do wonder sometimes if I got in one now, with the benefit of the considerable number of hours I've spent and knowledge accrued in my menagerie of craft since, wether I could make one go, I think I'd still be screwed over 15-18 knots upwind, but I know a bit about kickers and lifting plates and stuff I wasn't that familiar with then. Not that it would make launching the biatch off the beach and recovering it any easier with that sticky rudder and daggerboard and I've seen much much better sailors than me come to grief with busted masts and stuff doing precisely that, but it's interesting the world has moved away from the concept at least round our way.

perhaps the world has just moved away from Hythe!

Good fleet out at the Stokes Bay open last weekend, plenty of activity in the fleet,  but none of that matters to you because you believe its too unattainable.

Its a great boat to sail just for the sake of sailing and the racing, for those people who's ego doesn't exceed their ability is very competitive

launching would be your biggest issue, FWIW, understandably so.... I also wouldn't mind another go in one at some point.  I reckon I could more or less pick up where I left off, and then apply some of the better balance and trim skills, not to mention wind awareness and technical understanding I've accrued from windsurfing.  If I was 20 minutes closer to Heathrow I'd almost be tempted to join Datchet purely to get one again.

But honestly I would probably hit a brick wall not further up the learning curve when the inevitable lack of time vs progress kicks in...  maybe one day, before buying the next solo anyway.

No the MPS world I knew is either foiling or gone sit down RS100. And nobody's ability is ever going to exceed my ego, certainly no dinghy sailor...

there were plenty of former musto sailors who tried out the RS100 back in the day... not sure how many of them stuck it though.

The two are not really comparable beyond their a) white and b) both have a kite

Exactly as JimC points out ...

http://www.mustoskiff.com/reports-and-news/2016/musto-renew-title-sponsorship.html" rel="nofollow - http://www.mustoskiff.com/reports-and-news/2016/musto-renew-title-sponsorship.html

MUSTO are no longer using Performance as a product line/category.

Because of that it made sense to bring the branding of the class in line with the sponsors.

Great news that MUSTO have yet again extended their relationships with the class and have increased their involvement.

The class continues to prosper in no small part to the support of MUSTO.

A post full of facts really stops a thread, doesn't it?!

It does Rupert. Nothing like a bit of raw prejudice to keep us happy. Allison Young has just won the European? Radials so to keep my prejudice alive I looked up her vital statistics which are 5'9" and 10 1/2 stone. I wanted her to be at least a stone heavier and 6" taller. Wish I had not looked now......must have been light winds!

Radial Worlds, not Europeans. Quite an achievement - first GBR world champion in a women's  Olympic single-handed dinghy class.

Please do not think that in any way I do not recognise her achievement......particularly in one so light!!

Of course not, just highlighting the achievement for anyone who's interested. But is 10.5 stone (plus 5'9" of leverage) really that light for a Radial?

respect to her.... that's one hell of an achievement.

I don't know the latest figures, but I do remember that the ideal weight for a man in a radial was more than for a woman. Turns out what matters is not being far from the norm for the boat, so there isn't any weather you suck in, rather than an ideal for the boat.

When we went to Weymouth in 2012, Sail Laser had some of the Olympic boats. Everyone wanted a go in Alison Young's boat. So glad she has won this.

How big is the Chinese girl who has the Olympic Gold? I believe she is very tall? She has also written her autobiography. I met Sarah Ayton a few years ago and she (as well as making me go weak at the knees) was quite small but she was a Europe sailor. Now America's cupping.......back to MPS.
