If the mast is aluminium it is worth taking a look for cracks around the shroud fittings. These are a sure sign that the mast is showing wear.

Also check your rigging - often it is not the mast that initially breaks but one of the shrouds or your forestay.

Are you talking about a Topper mast?

They can take a lot more abuse than a "proper" tapered mast on something like a Fireball. I used to work in a sailing school which used Toppers and in the time I was there we didn't break a single mast, despite them fairly regularly getting stuck in sand bars with 5 knots of tide trying to break them. (In the same time, I think we got through about 9 or 10 Wayfarer masts!)

A Topper mast wouldn't be worth claiming on the insurance for though if it did break - the new cost is only marginally above the excess of some policies.

So if my mast breaks what will my insurance pay for? Can I order a custom C-Tech mast from New Zeland? Or a nice new wing mast from Seldon? Or do I have to go for an RMW CST? Or would they just buy me a carbon tube from superspar and say make it from that?

Read your policy. Restricting payout to 2/3rds of replacement cost is quite common for lower-cost policies.

noble insurane, do a new for old policy, so basically your looking to get a new version of what you had, and somtimes what you had doesnt exist any more so you can claim up to what you said your mast or whatever was initially worth to insure and then you can pay extra over and above that if you want to get something better, so if you said your old mast was worth £1000 to replace to you, and in 4 years time you broke it, you'd phone up with a list of quotes for masts at £1000 that are close to what you want and similar to what you had in a sense, and then if you wanted a newer mast thats better at £1500 then you would have to pay all £1500 and then the insurance firm would give you a cheque for £1000, just remember to update the policy if you get something more expensive!

When I took out my insurance they never asked how much my mast was worth, the only value they took was for the whole boat. So aslong as I got a mast less than the value of the boat would that cover it?

yeh i presume so, they'll probably ask you to find a quote for a mast similar to what you had, then keep that logged in the system for future reference, and then you'll either be sent a cheque to buy the mast or they will buy it and give it to you, or perhaps you buy it and they pay you after upon recipt
