So if I were sailing a B rig at 60KG I'd probably be overpowered but how good a job does the Cunningham do at dowering the rig and is the A rig that much less powerful. Brigs are thin on the secondhand market and A rig set ups are proving to be very hard to come across, so far i have found 2 but one has been sold and aren't holding much hope for the other due to it being on the market a while. |

Excuse the double post but i found that rooster makes replica sails both B and A rig.
I was thinking would it be worth buying a B rig boat and then getting an A rig mast and replica sail or am I then just better off getting new anyway.
I doubt I would be joining in any RS300 events to the replica doesn't matter, I'd only be into informal handicap racing at the local clubs but If i were to try out the RS300 circuit then Id probably get a new sail but by then the A rig rooster replica will probably be in need of replacing. I'm just asking as all i can find is B rig boats and If i were to try the B rig as i said in a past post at lest i have a replica A rig if it doesn't work out till I'm ready for B rig. You probably think I'm the most indecisive member here but at lest I have a target boat now |

Welcome the world of real hiking fun feva sailor The A rig as Tom says is indeed a shorter mast. However there is a stump option on one of the boats at our club and the mast bend is the same. This gives you the option to change from A to B easily. Regarding your question on the cunningham this contol is no where near as important on the 300 as the kicker. With the kicker full on you can turn a deep powerful B rig sail into a complete blade ... flat as a a pancake Good luck with your hunt as finding a good one seems to be getting more and more difficult each year. |

Feva sailor, LDC have just reduced to price of their 300 sails to a price which is only slightly more than the Rooster sail so you are not really saving anything. The kicker is very efficient at its job and so is the cunningham. Outhaul only really works well once you have a block attached to the sail. They are pretty simple boats to set up and the only really "must have's" on the boat are a continuouse kicker and getting rid of the jammer on the main sheet. Other than that any boat will be racing pedigree. Even if you decide to re-rig the control lines they are not that long and it would not be expensive. The best advice for a newcomer the boat is stick with it. Contra to popular belief there are not that many A rigs around so buying one will be harder as well as selling one too. With the mast costing around £800 and the sail £460 it can be an expensive switch between the two. Also very few people run both rigs so there are very few spare rigs around for people to sell/swap. In fact, if you wish to swap rigs the easiest way of doing it is to sell the boat complete and buy another one. There is an article in the December issue of RS News about a light weight girl sailing a B rig in Scotland. She found it manageable and found that technique will outstrip weight and brawn advantages in the boat. If you PM me your email address I will send you a scanned copy if you do not already have one. If you do get a B rig then I am sure that once over the learning curve you will be building up in wind strength each time you go out. Which ever you get you will have a great time and savour the learning learning curve. It is so rewarding. Rich |
