From a quick flip thro this forum, my problem seems to come up quite often - I want an asymmetric single-hander but only weigh 58kg, so am too light for absolutely everything.

Many people in this situation seem to end up accepting the gap & sticking with a Radial or some such (which is what I sail at the moment). The thing is, tho, the reason I'm doing all this dinghy sailing is to train for a single-handed asymmetric keelboat - so I really really do need practice with that kite.

So, the question is - what's the best compromise (accepting that I may not be able to take any of them out in a big blow)? Laser 3000? Vareo? The nice people at RS recommended the 100, which looks too cool to be true, but would I really be able to hold it? Or right it?

Any help very much appreciated.

Thanks
Lucy

Perfect for a Farr 3.7 with asymmetric.

I'm hoping to build the class in the UK with either option. ie with or without kite.

Search for Farr 3.7 on here to find the thread or click the blog link below.

Unluckily for you, the mini version of the musto that was in development seems to have gone quiet.

The Farr does look really interesting - the thing is that I probably only want something for a year or two before trading up to the keelboat, so resale value is an issue - which makes the shipping costs quite a significant factor.

If you just want something cheap to practise with how about a concept 302 - http://sailingdinghies.apolloduck.co.uk/listings.phtml?cid=694 ? There was one at our club for a while and it seemed to be pretty sorted for a lightweight sailors assy single hander. Of course you won't find a fleet to race against....

A new smaller 7.4m RS 100 or the small rigged Devoti D1.  Both aimed at people around 60kg.

I think you'll find that the Vareo is too much of a handful upwind even with a Storm sail and two man boat running as a single hander will surely be better suited to a larger person.

What about a vortex? (no idea if that's suitable) but be cheap to run for a few years as prices seemed to have bottomed out.

I'd agree with the Feva comment, if the main idea is to get to grips with singlehanding with a kite. Anything more than a drifer and you'll have good fun, too.

Feva option sounds interesting - only concern, I guess, is whether it would be testing enough/fast enough in light winds. (I've single-handed a Laser 3000 in lighter winds & can manage the asymmetric quite easily.) The keelboat I want is a stupidly high-performance model, so I'd like to get practice at going as fast & hard as possible - on the other hand, I don't really want something I can't take out in anything over a F4. Hm.....

RS100 - the reason I mentioned about the righting is that I found a video review online that suggested it wasn't as easy as all that - if not, that's great. Any other relevant pros or cons would also be very helpful.

D-One - looks fantastic, but where do you get one? And does it cost an arm & leg??
