Basics here :

http://www.soyouwanna.com/site/syws/mahjong/mahjongFULL.html

It is a very old Chinese card/domino type game.  Can play for £ or for fun.  I've a set we picked up in Hong Kong last time I was there and it's been gatherind dust and I would like to learn how to play it properly.  I've done a search of Amazon and a few books come up, just really looking for some-one who plays it and can give me a few pointers.

Just been to Google, typed in Mah Jong there are a few references.

This is not meant to patronize,  I was just  pleased to have found it on web and thought it might help a little.

It is played in a similar manner to Rummy.  The tiles are divided in to minor and major tiles.  Winds, Dragons, Ones and Nines are major and 2 to 8 are minor.  There are three suits, bamboo, circles and characters.  You build the tiles into 4 walls to make a square.  Each wall is 17 tiles long and two tiles high and each tile is face down.  Then each player takes 13 tiles, but the way this is done is quite complex.  One player 'East Wind' takes 14 tiles.  You then try and make groups of three which can either be a run of three or three of a kind.  To win you need 4 groups of three and a pair.  Three of a kind can become 4 of a kind.  If you want I can send you much more detailed instruction, as it is basically very simple to play, but the scoring is quite complicated.  Be warned, when you have played it a few times it is adictive.

Yes please Pete, I've got that far from the instructions I have from the set I bought in Hong Kong, but these were obviously written by a Mandarin speaker in English and so the transaltion is not good.  I'm open to any help, but would like a book so I can also theach the wife and kids.
