Basics here :

http://www.soyouwanna.com/site/syws/mahjong/mahjongFULL.html - http://www.soyouwanna.com/site/syws/mahjong/mahjongFULL.html

It is a very old Chinese card/domino type game.  Can play for £ or for fun.  I've a set we picked up in Hong Kong last time I was there and it's been gatherind dust and I would like to learn how to play it properly.  I've done a search of Amazon and a few books come up, just really looking for some-one who plays it and can give me a few pointers.

It is played in a similar manner to Rummy.  The tiles are divided in to minor and major tiles.  Winds, Dragons, Ones and Nines are major and 2 to 8 are minor.  There are three suits, bamboo, circles and characters.  You build the tiles into 4 walls to make a square.  Each wall is 17 tiles long and two tiles high and each tile is face down.  Then each player takes 13 tiles, but the way this is done is quite complex.  One player 'East Wind' takes 14 tiles.  You then try and make groups of three which can either be a run of three or three of a kind.  To win you need 4 groups of three and a pair.  Three of a kind can become 4 of a kind.  If you want I can send you much more detailed instruction, as it is basically very simple to play, but the scoring is quite complicated.  Be warned, when you have played it a few times it is adictive.

Yes please Pete, I've got that far from the instructions I have from the set I bought in Hong Kong, but these were obviously written by a Mandarin speaker in English and so the transaltion is not good.  I'm open to any help, but would like a book so I can also theach the wife and kids.

Sorry Sir, only trying to be facetious, wrong topic, I suppose...

When you've found out the rules, please post them, we'll all practise and have a maxiMahJong party at the dinghy show !!!

And if any of you want to take the mickey, you don't understand anything to this ancient arcane game, bearing within its rules all the secrets of the deepest Asia.

(basically, it's very pretty, tried to play, never got it  )

You're off quite soon, arent you? We'll be at the Dinghy Show all talking about you!!

Take plenty of pix to show us what REAL snow's like (not the balding patches of freezer shavings, like in my garden  )

Oh, one more thing: have fun!

Well, maybe not that far above snow... But I can picture scoob suspended in mid-air for seven years, waiting for the cable to snap

No wonder he wants to play Mah Jong! He's probably fed up with "I spy!"

Mah Jong has not been played yet.

Now, the Skiing.

Firstly when you hire your ski's (First time in 15 years as I've always had my own in the past) and ask for the DIN setting at 8.5, check that they have actually set them at 8.5 and not 10-12 which mine had been - Had a major wipe out at speed on the first day and had that oh Sh!t feeling and my knee bent forwards, but the ski did come off in the end (both in fact).  Must have been going fairly fast as it took about 50m for me to stop once the ski's came off - result, no skiing the next day and lots of pain.

Rest of the skiing was excellent (if taken a little easy) and a little cold (-30 at the top of the Valluga I lift ! - 2650m) and then it snowed and snowed and snowed, and then snowed a little more, in fact it snowed so much I spent virtually no time off piste as it was way too dangerous (5 killed while I was there off the back of the Kapall skiing a closed ski route without a guide - idiots.  )

For anyone who has been there - when the run back from Valluga finally opened, it had been piste bashed - now skiing that when it is flat is fun

Question is where to go next year......

As for my comments about staying above the snow, I like to do a little flying while I Ski, some of my mates called me biggles on one holiday

And finally, 3rd time to St. Anton and I have not skiied the route from the top station of the valluga II lift to Zurs
