Is it? And can someone please explain why? Do you mean al GPS devices? Or are there only certain types that are banned?

Cheers

Some of those fancy watches also have a barometer - are they permitted?

I think in some classes (National 12 springs to mind) they are banned because they can show VMG.

Talking of VMG...

Has anyone found out any more about the velocitek compasses.  They've got a new model out (S10) which has got a usb connection so you can download into gpsanlayser and google earth.

The website says free shipping to the UK but do you have to pay import duty on them?

I was just looking at their website. They look really cool. I want one. Shame they don't have a UK dealer.

I am getting one i think, should be in the next few weeks . A guy at my club is going to america on business and is buying them while he is there to avoid the extra costs of import rubbish.

I will report back on how i think it is, and how the other guy is finding it. Will be used on a 600 and 49er. That is the reason i asked wether GPS banned by some classes, as it would be very expensive not to be able to use it!

I think it depends on the class rules whether gps is banned or not.  For the same sort of reason why different types of tacktick compasses are allowed and others are not.

$300 works out at something like £170 so they're cheaper than the tacktick micro compasses and you get alot more for your money.

Apparantly, if a US company sends an item marked as a "sample", the import duty doesn't apply!

49er rules C2.2 (d)

prohibited."

RS600 rules

Does that make a speedometer device illegal to race with? Trying to get around this rule somehow There must be loads of sailors breaking these rules without even realising it.
