Just reading this report.

http://www.yachtsandyachting.com/news/?article=23456

Do they really care about top brit ... I would have thought winning the event would have been the objective.

Top Brit only has any meaning if the event is a qualifier for the Olympic slot.

BUT it's always useful when getting sponsorship to show that the media to publish things.  If I was sponsoring him and the boat was named "sponsered by letshaveachat.com" I would be much happier that he got a mention than if he had not.  Does it mean anything, no, but it will help the sponsers......(if you have any).

Think about that for a bit Rick. Sponsorship is a wobbly old game.
Depending on your brand a glorious loser can do wonders.

Something you should know as a marketer.

You want to sponsor the winner rather than the top Brit? It's already proven that the top brit is going to get more publicity in (presumably) your marketplace. That would appear to be the best commercial use of your sponsorship pound. Of course they'd get even more publicity if they won...

But, actually I am interested in who is top Brit, especially as in this case it is not who I expected.

I mention this not in the context of sponsorship but more about what the goals of the sailors are and how their achievements are reported.

I am sure all our Team GBR sailors want to win every event they attend and that their position relative to other Team GBR sailors is only of interest if it is a qualification regatta.

We have a great squad of sailors that have won loads of gongs over the recent years; top Brit is of interest but not what the goal is ...

If that was a report I would suggest it was written and submitted by the said "top Brit" purely for the purposes of publicity and to attract sponsorship.  Saying "I finished 7th" isn't going to sell that well so he has gone for top Team GBR sailor and beat Mr. Goodison...and the result would have been much better if only the wind was stronger.

But maybe I am just cynical.

One step forwards, 2 steps back...
