Just have to say that on Saturday. I managed to get a sail in an mps. It was the best sailing ive ever had and some of the hardest physically and skill wise. The boat was amazing and was so responsive in the varying winds of BBSC. Obviously i went swiiming but I was always keen to get going again. The only reason i gave the boat back was because Mr Ashby wanted to go home

Ian is correct on the above - I think the latest sail number is now 225 but the web is struggling to keep up ... Given the results of the Tide RIde I'd suggest that one or both of the boats have an inaccurate PY number. The problem of basing numbers on returns is that the average MPS/700 sailor will have a swim in a race. Then when a good guy gets in they sail with no swims and do well. This is the same for any boat in which the average sailor may have a swim e.g. 49er & I14. This is one reason why these classes are a good choice for a handicap bandit. But anyone who gets excited about handicap racing is missing the point - it's just for fun really. regards, Rick |

But the MPS's miss out the first 50 numbers, I believe for use in regatta's. Check out the entries on the list. Ian |

Re the handicap, Hayling weigh the numers of fast boats upwards, and slow boats down I believe, basically cos fast ones go better in the tidal conditions, so "Hayling" numbers are only relevant in club races there! I think it's a couple of %

I think there's about 218 MPS's regisetred on their web site, so it's probably 225MPS vs 260RS700. |

Hi Sten, Sorry, I wan't trying to spread confusion with the numbers. If you're talking total numbers then it's about 170 MPS vs 260 RS700. Rick told me there were about 80 MPS's in the UK and I assumed there would be about another 10 built since then. I also know we have about 160 RS700's. I totally agree that they're both great boats and loads of fun to sail. I wish I'd leapt out of my Laser years earlier..... Ian RS700 GBR 912 |

There's actually about twice as many 700's in the UK than MPS's(~160 vs ~80-90 according to Rick when I last asked). However I think your point is valid about either class not doing that much handicap racing. I would trust the 700 figure more than the MPS simply based on weight of numbers. [/QUOTE] There are 170 MPS listed on the Musto skiff web site proberbly more sold since last updated I guess there are simular numbers of each class. I have done quite alot of handicap racing in my MPS, B&F Eskimo,Hoofreezer,Tiger Trophy,Top Club,Lord Birket trophy,Weston Grand Slam,Scottish Skiffs,Scottich CofC, and lots of club racing at Rutland.I find the MPS handicap fair compared to other assermetric boats. ie 29er will win in the breeze and 49er in medium, 4000 light and B14s around equal but we have a slight edge. I think the RS700 handicap should be around the same as the MPS as at the Holt Tide Ride. Both boats are great fun to sail which is all that matters.

Also PY's are going to be of an Average Sailor sailing the boat because clubs returns may have people varying in standard. Therefore if someone is good at sailing the boat (above average then obviously they are sailing faster than there PY). My point is that the PY isnt based on the fastest the boat can be sailed more the average it was sailed.
Another thing is if in a race someone is sailing averagely and everyone else has a dog of a day this can make there achived handicap look lower than it realisticly is as PY's are all relative to the boats you are racing against. Edited by Calum_Reid |

Out of interest Grafham seem to be using 862 for the RS700 this year whereas at Hayling Island they've been sailing off 820 for some time! Ian RS700 GBR912 |
