Had a go in one yesterday...very impressed!  Though it was really quick downwind, until I went upwind, and realised it was just really quick whatever.

Managed to get stuck in irons coming out of a gybe (yep, a gybe!).  I'm guessing that to start with racing these is just simply a matter of NOT SWIMMING...took me ages to get it back up again!

Nice boat and respect to anyone who can sail it well.

Hi Iain,

Glad you enjoyed it.

I was amazed when I got into irons on a dead run as well - normally caused because you lost too much speed during the gybe and lost the apparent wind stalling out all of the sails - dumping  the kite and getting the main working is the quickest way to get going again..

Similarly there's techniques to speed up the recovery - dump kicker and main, you only need to partially drop the kite - use the Assy sheets to get more leverage etc....

You are always close to the edge sailing these high performance boats, but then that's part of the challenge.  The big grin bit's in between more than make up for it

Where were you sailing?

I was sailing at Draycote, it was a nice day for it, if a little cold!

Great racing at Bough Beech yesterday.  3 or 4 700s and 2 MPS, not to mention at least 2 800s.  I was the mug on the power boat organising it - damn cold.

I think the 700 looks gr8. Although am weirdly drawn to the MPS. Mainly because some scalliwag has said i could have a go! But they do fly and with someone at the helm such as Mr Andy Peake (former inlands champ) there is no stopping them!

That's some job you're going to get if a 700 will come out of one pay cheque...

Fortunately there's a steady stream of second hand boats which keeps the second hand prices reasonable for newcomers to the class.

Still a very good job if you can cover £4K in one hit though

Heh, I'm trying, just got to finish my degree first!

Anyway the 700 looks a great bit of kit, my only concern (besides my inability to afford one atm) about it is how well it performs to it's PY. 857 is a pretty low number, especially considering the MPS is 875 and some recon it to be the faster of the two?

Posted By: 5420
Date Posted: 11 Jan 06 at 1:07pm

iv heard that the mps is faster on the water from the tide ride

so i think tha handy cap is a bit unfaid in that resect but they still do well at my club

Would of thought the 700s handicap is lower because there are more of them so the RYA get more of them on their club returns each year meaning they have a lower PY compared to the MPS where the numbers are pretty small in comparison so intern has a higher handicap because of returns etc.

I dont think there are that many more 700's the biggest thing is that alot of them wont sail in handicap racing that much and therefore the PY wont have moved much from the one that the manufacturer suggested.

The RYA don't pay any attention to manufacturer supplied PYs but only use data from the clubs. However if the clubs are just using the manufacturer one then...

There's actually about twice as many 700's in the UK than MPS's(~160 vs ~80-90 according to Rick when I last asked).  However I think your point is valid about either class not doing that much handicap racing.  I would trust the 700 figure more than the MPS simply based on weight of numbers.

Out of interest Grafham seem to be using 862 for the RS700 this year whereas at Hayling Island they've been sailing off 820 for some time!

Also PY's are going to be of an Average Sailor sailing the boat because clubs returns may have people varying in standard. Therefore if someone is good at sailing the boat (above average then obviously they are sailing faster than there PY). My point is that the PY isnt based on the fastest the boat can be sailed more the average it was sailed.

Another thing is if in a race someone is sailing averagely and everyone else has a dog of a day this can make there achived handicap look lower than it realisticly is as PY's are all relative to the boats you are racing against.

There are 170 MPS listed on the Musto skiff web site proberbly more sold since last updated I guess there are simular numbers of each class.

I have done quite alot of handicap racing in my MPS, B&F Eskimo,Hoofreezer,Tiger Trophy,Top Club,Lord Birket trophy,Weston Grand Slam,Scottish Skiffs,Scottich CofC, and lots of club racing at Rutland.I find the MPS handicap fair compared to other assermetric boats. ie 29er will win in the breeze and 49er in medium, 4000 light and B14s around equal but we have a slight edge.

I think the RS700  handicap should be around the same as the MPS as at the Holt Tide Ride.

Both boats are great fun to sail which is all that matters.

Hi Sten,

Sorry, I wan't trying to spread confusion with the numbers.

If you're talking total numbers then it's about 170 MPS vs 260 RS700.  Rick told me there were about 80 MPS's in the UK and I assumed there would be about another 10 built since then.  I also know we have about 160 RS700's.

I totally agree that they're both great boats and loads of fun to sail.  I wish I'd leapt out of my Laser years earlier.....

I think there's about 218 MPS's regisetred on their web site, so it's probably 225MPS vs 260RS700.

Re the handicap, Hayling weigh the numers of fast boats upwards, and slow boats down I believe, basically cos fast ones go better in the tidal conditions, so "Hayling" numbers are only relevant in club races there! I think it's a couple of %

But the MPS's miss out the first 50 numbers, I believe for use in regatta's.  Check out the entries on the list.

Ian is correct on the above - I think the latest sail number is now 225 but the web is struggling to keep up ...

Given the results of the Tide RIde I'd suggest that one or both of the boats have an inaccurate PY number.

The problem of basing numbers on returns is that the average MPS/700 sailor will have a swim in a race.

Then when a good guy gets in they sail with no swims and do well.

This is the same for any boat in which the average sailor may have a swim e.g. 49er & I14.

This is one reason why these classes are a good choice for a handicap bandit. But anyone who gets excited about handicap racing is missing the point - it's just for fun really.

regards,

Rick

Just have to say that on Saturday. I managed to get a sail in an mps. It was the best sailing ive ever had and some of the hardest physically and skill wise. The boat was amazing and was so responsive in the varying winds of BBSC. Obviously i went swiiming but I was always keen to get going again. The only reason i gave the boat back was because Mr Ashby wanted to go home . Truly an awesome bit of kit and big respect to the people who can sail them well. When i am older (and better) i will without any hesitation buy an MPS.
