Thanks for all the advise.

I ended up getting a new-ish Vareo from Mike Saul, took it out at the weekend and I am delighted with it.  Its pretty forgiving and only took a few swims with the kite up due to very poor technique Big smile

I was looking at that vareo too, thought it looked quite good. Have decided to wait til winter then there might be more, also at 54 kg probably a bit little for it! I don't think you will get one cheaper than 2k... Could wait for boat show and see what deal you could get on a new/ display one

Hi Adam,

At your size, you are into Phantom territory.  You could also consider a Contender or a Finn.  All of these boats are now represented at our club.  An older GRP Phantom or an older GRP Contender might be within your budget (say less than £2000) - look on the class websites.  Finns tend to be more expensive. Talk to the owners at the club and ask for a trial sail.

Hi Ian

Thanks for the advice, I will ring Mike.  I have been using the club laser, going up saturday for a sail if you are about I will say Hi.

I like the laser and I honestly think that you should be able to sail a laser to a reasonable standard before moving onto anything else so I am happy to keep sailing it.  But as I am 6 foot 2" and 15 stone I do find them a bit cramped.

Hi Adam,

Speak to Mike Saul at the club.  He is the northern RS agent and is in contact with many of the clubs in the north of England.  He may know if there are any Vareo boats coming up for sale in the area.

Depending on your size, have you considered a Laser?  We have an active Laser fleet at YDSC and there are sailors of all levels.  Also, we have a couple of Laser club boats which you could use until a suitable Vareo comes up for sale.
