Greetings All

I am looking for a cheap Vareo for some club racing.  I have looked in the usual places online and posted on the Vareo forum.  I was wondering if anyone had one (or knows of someone who wants to sell) a vareo who hasn't made the step of advertising it online yet?

Cheers
Adam

I suspect there will be one coming up for sale soon at Burton Sailing Club as the owner has just joined the Phantom fleet.  What is your budget?

Depends on the boat, but as I am new to sailing I was hoping for a cheap one I could learn in

Hi Winging it

From research on boats that have sold lately that one seemed a bit on the high side for its age (could be wrong though)

I very much doubt there will be many Vareo's going for much cheaper than £2k.  Almost certainly not on e you would want to own.  Why not make them an offer.  I wouldn't expect to see one go for less than £1500.  But I guess its market forces and all that.

boats don't seem to be selling well at the moment.  I would look it up and make an ofer, especially since it drew no bids at all.

Hi Adam,

This may help and it is cheap and very local (but no trailer - which could easily be borrowed from our club (see Mike Saul), for a very short trip of around 10 miles):

Hi Adam,

Speak to Mike Saul at the club.  He is the northern RS agent and is in contact with many of the clubs in the north of England.  He may know if there are any Vareo boats coming up for sale in the area.

Depending on your size, have you considered a Laser?  We have an active Laser fleet at YDSC and there are sailors of all levels.  Also, we have a couple of Laser club boats which you could use until a suitable Vareo comes up for sale.

Hi Ian

Thanks for the advice, I will ring Mike.  I have been using the club laser, going up saturday for a sail if you are about I will say Hi.

I like the laser and I honestly think that you should be able to sail a laser to a reasonable standard before moving onto anything else so I am happy to keep sailing it.  But as I am 6 foot 2" and 15 stone I do find them a bit cramped.

Hi Adam,

At your size, you are into Phantom territory.  You could also consider a Contender or a Finn.  All of these boats are now represented at our club.  An older GRP Phantom or an older GRP Contender might be within your budget (say less than £2000) - look on the class websites.  Finns tend to be more expensive. Talk to the owners at the club and ask for a trial sail.

I was looking at that vareo too, thought it looked quite good. Have decided to wait til winter then there might be more, also at 54 kg probably a bit little for it! I don't think you will get one cheaper than 2k... Could wait for boat show and see what deal you could get on a new/ display one

Thanks for all the advise.

I ended up getting a new-ish Vareo from Mike Saul, took it out at the weekend and I am delighted with it.  Its pretty forgiving and only took a few swims with the kite up due to very poor technique Big smile
