i dont think it was all that different from the buzz, it was just a reshaped main and bigger kite that distinguished them both.

I measured a Spice main last year because I wanted to use them on my Cherub, but ditched that idea due to them being a sh*t shape, and 14's having much nicer sails which are much more "cut-downable". I can't remember what it came out as exactly, PC has the piece of paper. But it should be somewhere around the 4m2 mark.

cheers guys, how did you measure the main? there a guy with one at my club ill try n measure his - im thinking spice jib with slight adjustments = cheap 14 jib! (brand new kevlar mix spice job by sobstad is a hell of a lot cheaper than a brand 14 one!

The most accurate way of measuring sail area is probably the ISAF method. Its available in the Tech Support section of the Cherub website.

As for saving money, I suspect you'd be better off with a used 14 jib than a new Spice one. Area wise I understood that a Spice was pretty much a Buzz hull with an Iso rig, but that's just rumour.

I'm pretty sure my 14 jib is significantly bigger than my mates spice jib, my 14 is 13 years old though. The 'new' boats seem to have smaller jibs than mine.

The spice is a wierd boat. It has quite a big jib compared with the main but no where near enough sail area. You can often be easily twin wiring downwind and then be marginally single wiring upwind.

Despite what people say about it it's great to learn to helm from the wire on it and it's a fun boat to sail, just not enough sail area and far too heavy. With the spin up the bow comes miles out of the water compared to other boats which is strange the first time you sail it.

So what you're saying is that the Spice would be a wonderful boat if only it had a different rig and different hull? All I can say to that is "Have a really good look at the foils and you might change your mind..." [grin]

The spice i used to race had a brand new set of sails on it, and with the right
settings it was quite easy to twin upwind. The new 14 sails are smaller
because we use self tackers and thus the jib cannot overlap the mast, so you
sacrifice a tiny amount of sail area on the jib and add it to the main with the
fat head mains
