If it is a short secondment, it might be easier to get onto a bigger boat as a crew. There seems to be plenty of bigger boats racing on the Great Lakes. Just a thought.

What you need to know here is the "The World" was a newspaper that sponsored it's own series, hence "The World Series".

Speaking of the US, its looking like I'll be sent to Chicago for a short while on secondment - obviously I can't take my 300 with me; does anyone know of any decent American singlehanders and places to sail around there?
Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and
oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital
ingredient in beer.

There were but none qualified for the Gold fleet.

When I did the Laser Radial worlds in 2002 there was only 1 American, and even I beat him. It was in Barcelona, most American's probably think that's a suburb of London!

I spent a few months instructing in the US back in the 80's, and yes they sailed some really weird and wonderful boats. But don't forget the sheer size of the place perhaps does tend towards making sailers a bit parochial.

Still, amazing that there weren't any USA entrants to the Laser worlds.

Having spent a year living in the USA, and giving up on finding anywhere between NYC and Washington to actually get afloat on anything with a sail, I am surprised that there are that many different classes! I wonder if any of them are sailed outside the US (apart from the obvious Oppy) I bet they all have a 'World's', a bit like the World Series Baseball!

Strictly speaking, I don't think the USA has declared war on anyone since 1941.

That strikes me as slightly pathetic actually, yet bringing up that age old quote now that no other nation excells as we do at our sport... however if invading or burger eating / supersizing were catagories in the next olympics.....

If you spend any time in the USA and watch or read their media, you will find they have little knowledge of or interest in what goes on elsewhere. Given that they live in a huge and wealthy country, it's understandable, if a little distressing for a superpower.

But going back to sailing, is the Laser really not on the list? There wasn't a single USA boat in the Gold Fleet in the recent Laser Worlds.
