Make sure they race windward leeward courses if you go for the 5000, otherwise you'll be stuffed because you can only really drop the kite downwind and she doesn't like close reaching if there is any wind.

having a stronger class isn't as important as none of these boats are raced round bangor (where i'll be moving to), unless i get to a state where i want to do opens.

Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

49er has a stronger class though, and if you did go for an older 14, it would be a lighter boat and you'd have the luxury of a kite chute, not needing "he-man" as a crew.

as i'll be a student, the 5000 is probably a better idea if it is that much cheaper to keep running

£3000 for a 49er, then you need to insure her, then take in to consideration she is a much more delicate boat than the 5000. You'll have more fun and scares with a 49er, but the 5000 is a really fast boat and can be quite scary in a blow. The 5000 is much cheaper to keep running, I spent less sailing mine for the time I owned her than I did for one season in the 49er. 5000s are almost bomb proof and are on a lower insurance group. Stepping straight into a 49er would be a real up-hill struggle if you haven't really sailed twin trapeze boats before and it would be really expensive. Saying that though, the 49er will give you the biggest grin.

ok, thats a good point about the 5000, but older 49ers are down to around £3000

The 5000 is faster and you don't need to keep on throwing money at it to keep it competitive.

the cherub sounds like a good bet cos you could get a good one for about £2000!!  if you wanted to get a 14 you will have to make it yourself or take out a massive loan!!

The 4000 is a nice boat, but i would prefer twin trapeze, so a 5000, 49er, cherub or an I14
