Do a search for a previous thread on the 500 to find the general opinion on it
Ive not sailed either but im terrified if the 500 can send it like the 29er was on sunday.... |

The 29er is an extremely efficient design, the RS500 still looks like it was designed a few years before it and generally, I don't think RS were planning on building a 29er beater, think they were hoping to target, in some aspects, young sailors who didn't want to go as "hardcore" as the 29ers. The 500 might be more enjoyable to sail in some respects because you might get more from putting less effort into the boat than on the 29er. The theory seemed to work with the 800, not pitting it directly against the 49er, even although I remember reading that one of the prototypes was faster than the 49er but they decided to tone it down a bit to appeal to a wider audience. Maybe the 500 has "Vago-itis", it feels faster than it actually is, you can't really judge until you get both the boats out on the water and set them off against each other, I'll put £100 on the 29er being faster....

Any boat will go rediculous speed when you get into rediculous winds. Some of the fastest sailing i have ever done has been in the 29er. Having not sailed the 500 i cant give an educated opinion but it doesn't 'look' quite as fast - hull design wise.

I reckon we might be looking at comparing the 500 unfairly, reckon a good comparision might be against the V3000 and Vago, which are still pretty good boats.
