lol :D

But still, being able to talk to other sailors .. and especially to be able to get tips from them seems like the best part of big regattas to me. (well .. winning is good .. but still ... )

I'm going to try both the boats soon, just need to find a) the time and b) someone kind enough to let me try theirs (anyone with either a blaze or a vareo in hertfordshire?)

Student nationals, ermm The memories, or lack of. Certainly a messy one, for more reasons than one.  Next year Tim, bigger and better.

Just looking at this from a different prospective.....

The socials will probably be better if you don't get on with the boat at all. I always find that when in a position to do well at an event you always take it easy at the social... if you are already back of the fleet then you can hit the social hard without the worry of messing up the next day!

The only real acception to this rule is student sailing events where the drinking games at the social are possibly more competitive than the sailing itself

Socials are always so much better if you are in the right boat for you - and only a partial and poor substitute if you are not !!

Try them all out - even the socials if that's critical to you !  Mind you if only aspire to drinking shandy then you are going to severely restrict your choice amongst the singlehanders out there ....    Why not eat lots of pasta, drink beer without that poison 'lemonade' in it, put on a couple of Kg  and widen your choice !

Thanks.

Thats another thing my decision will swing on ... Social Events. I hvae heard that RS are legendary for their after-event parties.

One more question: What is the depth of the boat at its deepest point (eg - how deep is the daggerboard / rudder)?

Thanks for the replies

James

Chris - yes, the 300 planes upwind.

In about a F2, with the main in the middle you can just see the boat popping out of displacement mode if you look at the wake. At this point the 300 is still pointing ridiculously high for an unstayed rig.

A lot of people seem to think the 300 is at its best in a F2-3 at the most. to be honest, this is utter cobblers! In a F4, sailed well the 300 is an absolute rocket. You crack off about 5 or 10 degrees on the beet, with the boom on the rear three quarter and the 300 absolutely flies upwind. I've clocked 9knots upwind in a F4 before.

The thing to remember with the 300 is that you'll never see huge bow waves or spray when it planes. It has a very effecient hull which is very quiet and creates little disturbance - it's quite spooky the first time you get it wound up - there's no fuss or anything - it just goes like the clappers.

Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and
oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital
ingredient in beer.
