an oppie would bend itself in half if you put a big rig on it. why not get a moderately larger sail (say 10-11msq) and but hydrofoils on it
600 732, will call it Sticks and Stones when i get round to it.

worth noting though that kids heads are soft and squishy, bones haven't fused properly yet.  So a little extra protection can sometimes be approprite, the Gaff hats look quite unobtrusive for kids.
I might be sailing it, but it's still sh**e!

yeah but have you seen the helmet - it says 'bike equipment' on it. but does apear to be linked to sailing by the waves on it.

The worst accident I can remember from my time in Oppies was when someone dislocated their shoulder as the boat gybed with their arm stuck between the boom and the centreboard.

Perhaps they should go the whole 9 yards and insist on a bouyant american footballer's getup for each sailor?

That would at least give the little darlings (and their parents) the option to bring "fashion" into the equation - clearly a winner....!

Quality never goes out of fashion.

An oppy? why bother???!

get with the times... Oppys are a good 8 foot long... if your going to do something silly, like stick a huuuge rig on a tiny boat you might as well do it properly.

others may have differing opinions on that... you do ask for it...
on the subject of crash helmets - i was once made to wear one, being under 16. However my head was way lower than the boom at that point and it was my dad and the instructor who needed the helmets...
