Yes, the 400 has been around for over ten years and second hand boats are available to suit all budgets. Lots of lightly used pond sailed boats around if you're prepared to look. http://www.rs-association.com/index.html is a good start point to give an idea of what's around. RS200s are in demand so you probably get slighly less for you money. Mind you good time to haggle a people will soon have to hang on to boats till next season.

Maybe think about a laser 200 which has an ok class size but is a bit pedestrain

if a purist and wanting a long learning curve focused on technique, then a tasar is a mean boat- read "high performance sailing" by Frank Bethwaite and you will know why the tasar is so special. But if you aren't  in the london, cornwall or wales area there is v. litttle class sailing.

In any case if you want off wind fun choose assymetric

the RS 200 is actually by many accounts harder to sail than the 400!

A 420 can be sailed without trap but forget it in a fleet over a series.

"Not a lot of people know this!" both the 420 and the fireball began life without a trap at all!

laser 2000s are very easy to sail and stable. A very good introduction to controls and assym'

the RS 200 is by all accounts less stable and harder to sail than the big sister. In a blow or in light I have run circles round them in a tasar- another interesting boat they might like to consider depending if there is a fleet near them

otherwise what hike fleet do they have? Gp14 can entertain!
