My mate is looking to buy a boat for him and his crew. They are both looking for something that's relatively stable, is easy and enjoyable to sail, is relatively cheap and has good racing fleets!! Any suggestions (and please, to all my fellow cherub sailors....don't suggest a cherub)!!!!

What's wrong with a Cherub?  420 might be worth a try, it's a symmetric, I've taught in them (reasonably stable) and loved sailing them. They'll keep going in sily amounts of wind, need a bit to shift them though. I've had one out in gusting 7s and 8s and it was great! Frank reckons he's seen one for £150, I'd try and steal it but I'm going too soon Not sure about fleets, I've only team raced them..

What you have described so far could include most of the doublehanders in the country, depending on your perspective...

What weight range are they in?
2-sail, symetric, assymetric?
Hiking, Single wire, Twin string?

What about a 505, Merlin Rocket, Nat 12, Laser 2, GP 14? It all really depends where they sail which depends the fleets that are raced at their club

Ok - errrrr, they'd want to hike, they're not exerienced enough for a trapeze, it'd just scare them!!!  I have no idea what weight they are, but they'd prob want something with a spinny (assym or sym!)!!!

Does that help??!

Ellie, unless the are like uber rich and can afford something for about 1k, the 420 sounds good cos i saw it on the board at chew and it says 'all in working order with all equipment but had to sell as unsuitable for a family' so they could use the wire on the 420, or just hike like they do in team racing, it has a kite aswell. and they can't go to wrong, its only 150!

Not trying to sound like I'm plugging them too much, but 420s can be sailed without the trapeze in silly amounts of wind! This year I was sailing with a combined weight of about 20 stone in anything, and capsizes were due to mistakes rather than too little weight. The trapeze is there if it's wanted though and it has the kite..

Yeah!! The 420 sounds good! They do have a fair bit of money tho - would it be worth looking at something in the Laser or RS series, or maybe one of those new Topper boats??!

Go for an RS400 or 200 depnding on their weight, if they don't like it they can sell it again easily, and as they become proficient they've got good class racing available. Both stable vice free boats.

I'd agree with shingle, the 400 probably best suits them though

Yes, the 400 has been around for over ten years and second hand boats are available to suit all budgets. Lots of lightly used pond sailed boats around if you're prepared to look. http://www.rs-association.com/index.html - http://www.rs-association.com/index.html  is a good start point to give an idea of what's around. RS200s are in demand so you probably get slighly less for you money. Mind you good time to haggle a people will soon have to hang on to boats till next season.

Maybe think about a laser 200 which has an ok class size but is a bit pedestrain

if a purist and wanting a long learning curve focused on technique, then a tasar is a mean boat- read "high performance sailing" by Frank Bethwaite and you will know why the tasar is so special. But if you aren't  in the london, cornwall or wales area there is v. litttle class sailing.

In any case if you want off wind fun choose assymetric

the RS 200 is actually by many accounts harder to sail than the 400!

why dont they get a 4000 they are great fun and have a very good class association.  and it doesnt matter what weight they are cos of the weight equisation system!!  and they are relativly cheap!!

A 420 can be sailed without trap but forget it in a fleet over a series.

"Not a lot of people know this!" both the 420 and the fireball began life without a trap at all!

laser 2000s are very easy to sail and stable. A very good introduction to controls and assym'

the RS 200 is by all accounts less stable and harder to sail than the big sister. In a blow or in light I have run circles round them in a tasar- another interesting boat they might like to consider depending if there is a fleet near them

otherwise what hike fleet do they have? Gp14 can entertain!
