As to be expected, topper are about to launch a revamped version of the topaz which has...imagine that, almost exactly the same spec as the 500!!!

yer there are millions of them and they are all rubish,  the only decent one seems to be the xygon'y thing!    it seems like rs are going to have a flop on there hands.  it just seems like there is to many of the same boat,  rs500 vago,v3000,  the new topaz,

I had a look at the 500 at the show...personally I had a mixed reaction.  The rig was bigger than I expected, with a very square top section on the main, and big assy. Looked like it would be simple, and a blast to sail.

However, for a potentially sub PY1000 boat it does seem to have been designed down to the price a bit...no controls are led to the side, jib tension can't be adjusted on the water etc.  However, one big factor in the small price (for the size / performance) is that it will apparently be built abroad

I disagree. I also had a good look at it at the boat show and I think it will make an excellent racing class. Although there are lot of single trapeze asymmetric’s out there most are either showing there age or are just to much boat for a smaller helm and crew. The only real modern option that these people have is a 29er which is a bit sensitive for the inexperienced and the circuit is full of teenagers. Fine if you are one but not so much for the others or mums and dads.

The 3000 association have realised this growing problem hence the revamp with Vandercraft and they have produced a lovely boat. The test boat has been sailing at my club for a few months and looks very impressive. What they don’t have however is the mussel of a large company behind them.

I think if the 500 is built and marketed as well as the rest of the RS range, if it is as easy to sail as a Buzz or 3000 and if it can give some of the thrills of a 29er then they are onto a winner!
