The foils let go on  tightish 3 sail reach when hoppo was crewing for me. Resulted in a pitchpole!

Flickr is easy to use but was quite slow on  my pc. It is free for 100 photos, or 100mb can't remember which, a month but you have to pay after that. The 600 foils havn't let go yet which is all good but i have pitchpoled her which was interesting.

Cheers

When the rudder "lets go" and cavitates (or sucks air down onto the blade), wiggling actually helps the water re-attach and will give you your steerage back.  I wouldn't try it on the 49er, just keep the boat flat, but on slower classes it works a treat.

Just to clear things up, rudders do not cavitate, they ventilate.

I wouldn't on a 29er either.. Only boat I ever do it on is 420s because the do it so often... Or our rubbish school boats do.

That's what I meant when I said "sucks air down the blade".  I've seen the long discussion over cavitation, but couldn't be bothered to try to explain it all over again.  Oh well, I guess I failed... Anyway, sailors know it as cavitation, so why try to confuse them

Ventilation = Sucking air from the surface down the face of a submerged foil.
Cavitation =  The process where a void or bubble in a liquid rapidly collapses, producing a shock wave.
