We are currently throwing some ideas around to develop this idea of the "Cool Wall" (or possibly a "Cool List" so as not to upset messrs Clarkson, Hammond and May) linked to our new dinghy database and boat finder.

It would be a reasonably simple process to set up a scoring system for each class and allow you to cast your votes, along the lines of +2 for Sub zero, +1 cool, -1 uncool, -2 seroiusly uncool etc. and then publish a list of the top and bottom 20 classes.

There are a number of issues to overcome, such as ways to prevent duplicate votes for the same class, but assuming we sort these problems, would it be worthwhile?

Make the area of the site you can vote only available to members.  Then allow peoploe to join and only vote once.  You may still get people joining more than once.  But a step in the right direction.

I think that as much as an idea like that would be good if it worked, it wouldnt work. as weve seen just on this forum, peoples opinions vary a lot as to what counts as a 'cool' boat.
As well as this, and probibly more important: there are plenty of great boats out there that would get a lot of negative votes and put off prospective buyers. For people new to the dinghy scene a masive vote of 'UNCOOL'  would definantly influence their view on the boats, and from your point of veiw as an insurance company upsetting entire classes who are ranked as uncool, and are loosing prospective members cant be good for buisness.

And plus, if its anything like this site, the Cherub would be classed as the
coolest boat ever.

Fair comment - We have debated similar thoughts and this is exactly the kind of opinion I was seeking.

I think it would work quite well- but not necessarily be an accurate design- people opinions on whats cool or not varies, but youd get a generall idea.

I think it's a great idea but probably not from a commercial organisation - sorry Mr Marine.

OK - Some small amendments later, we have set up a trial system, allowing users to vote on a particular class, but have dropped the cool / uncool idea.

Assuming we get some meaningful voting, we can then decide how (or indeed if) we publish the results.  Certainly from the comments made, it would not be in anyone's best interests to publish the classes with the worst votes.  It remains to be seen whether the results only serve to show what we already know.

Ultimately it is only meant as a bit of harmless fun and we will ditch the idea if it proves to be un-workable or unpopular.

Have a look at the classes via the boat finder.
