6ft and 12st?

What's the budget?

Blaze, Streaker, Supernova, OK, Solo?
Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

The Blaze is very very comfy when hiking you just need to get the toestraps set correctly.

Fantastic when it is blowing and you cruise past everyone (esp Lasers) as they struggle like hell upwind. It is a boat I will go back to when time and money permits. Until now I just like to play in the 8.1 (but you have to hike like hell).

Easy answer it to have a go. If you have things like Phantoms and 8.1s floating around you will always have someone to race against. Even a well sailed Laser will keep up until you get on a reach.

I was just suggesting you try one... Mine gets loaned out quite regularly to sailors at my club when its a nice day, and no-one's failed to be able to sail it up and down the lake. They're not *that* hard to sail...

I think you would be suprised Richard, Its easier then you think to get a canoe round the cans!  Having said that i found gybing a right handfull in a blow but that was just lack of time in the boat!

Those canoes still look very scary to me despite the positive comments above,

I do fancy a bash in a Blade or RS300 though.

Richard you are very welcome to come and try my contender (620) - you are the ideal height and weight, and they are reputedly easier than a 600 if you want to ease your way into single handed trapezing.

It is at Farmoor at the moment but should be at Grafham early in the new year (please god let nothing go wrong with the house sale)
the same, but different...

Thanks for the offer of boats etc.

As for the Canoe, although I may be able to handle it, I still like the idea of getting into trapeezing

Question regarding the Contender though, the boom looks really low, how easy is it to learn?

status, if your anywhere near n.wales or falmouth then your welcome to have a sail in my 300.

having came from a radial into a 300 myself i can say that it has taught me so much about steering and sheeting for balance downwind. it also taught me a lot about slogging upwind but rather than going for pointing (as in laser) you need a combination of speed (low) and height. very difficult to get the balance. it is a beautiful looking boat which depowers nicely with kicker and downhaul, rewards good sailing and punishes bad sailing.

one thing i would say is that in breeze and chop the 300 is almost impossible to sail to handicap because you cant really go for it due to the fine bow digging in (it can be very frustrating like today). one other thing, the booms hurt like hell if they hit you on the head. i have a lovely line shaped lump as proved. this isnt normally a problem but my halyard slipped 6" over the course of the race

i wouldnt discount the 300 if i was you until you try one. its surprisingly friendly on the knees and a very comfortable hiking position.

Update

Popped down to the Hamble at the weekend only to have a boat following me home.

Decided I need a new challenge, so got myself a Rs700.

Now got a MASSIVE learning curve, but hey, lifes too short.........
