Ok, thought I'd never do one of these "what boat" threads but the time has come.
I have been sailing the Laser for 6 years, learnt a lot in it (as it has been my first boat) but the time has come to move on to stretch myself and progress my learning curve. I am not the most competitive person racing but race to get out there and try and win if I can. I did however manage to "strategically" win the TVLG Radial class, so I know I can win things but have got the "been there, done that" slogan running through my head.
So what do I want, something that I can learn more with, has to be singlehanded (have a 200 for the occasional times OH wants to sail) so been thinking of a trapeze boat, but then again, maybe not. The stats about 6ft, 12st (sailing weight)
I have been looking at the Blaze, 300, 600, 700, contender and Vareo.
Blaze - Ok, but not sure I'd get on with it, would it be a progression/challenge
300 - Knocked it out, cos its a "drop hiker" something I struggle with following a knee injury back in the kiddie days.
600/700 - look exciting, watch in awe as they fly past me and (i want to do that) comes over me!
Contender - looks a low boom, never seen one (apart form Villians old thing!) so don't know a lot about them.
Vareo - Looks good, got a kite but as you spend longer going upwind than down, will be a pain (from what I have heard) 70% of the time.
So maybe a trapeeze boat, not had a lot of experience trapeezing but did start off crewing on a Dart Hawk (F18) or a more advanced hiking boat
So rather than the go for my boat answers, I'd like, what would you go for answer.
Thanks

I agree with James,
I moved from Laser to RS600 having crewed for a mate in his ISO & Peni 14 a few times, and it was the best thing I ever did, that was 10yrs ago.
Spent 6 months learning to tack, gybe and depower the rig properly (got scared of pulling that much cunningham on!) but after that it was awesome.
Once you've mastered the 600 you'll be able to sell pretty much anything.
No more pain due to hiking upwind, awesome on a reach, and you can relax on the runs.
Do it, you know it makes sense

Theres plenty of room for a moth down your end of the
river Richard!
If you were looking for a boat with a kite and youve
previously had a knee injury i would definatly rule out
a vareo over a 700. Its quicker, more fun and your not
going to rip your knees apart by leaning over the edge.
Im looking into getting one next year aswell. If you get
one you should come up to the BSC and do some races!
Weve got a massive skiff fleet now. At the moment theres
3 RS700s, 4 Musto skiffs, 2 49ers, an RS800 and the
Cherub Daemon. And then theres the mighty pink Spitfire
to liven things up a bit.
It all makes for great racing!

Where do you sail?
What other boats sail at your club?

If you have bad knees then I would try a trap boat. Although if you stayed in the laser for six years with bad knees then they can't be that bad.
I would not rule out the 300 as it is a very comfortable boat to hike from and you can pretty much hike straight leg if you raise the toe straps enough. Also it does not need any grunt to sail it. I think any of the boats you have suggested will improve your appreciation for trim/pitch etc. I think Mr Moore might be taking offers on his 300. If you want a test sail you can always look someone up on http://www.rs300.org.uk/ - http://www.rs300.org.uk/ or pm me if you want sorting out and I'll try and find someone in your area.

Its always worth blagging a go on a Canoe... No performance boat is kinder on the knees and few can provide quite the grin factor. Definitely what you might call a marmite boat though.
With 6 years of Laser experience you should be able to sail it in light to moderate conditions, but you'll need to work up to a breeze!

Blaze - Ok, but not sure I'd get on with it, would it be a progression/challenge -- nice boat to sail with the X Rig & alot easier to "get on with" then you think,It`s the ONE boat that I always think I might go back to & is very easy on the knees because of the racks & reacts well to most conditions sea or inland with the controlable rig.
300 - Knocked it out, cos its a "drop hiker" something I struggle with following a knee injury back in the kiddie days. -- this can be stright leg hiked easily & like the Blaze rewards the sailor willing to put in the time, big learning curve but realy worthwhile.
600/700 - look exciting, watch in awe as they fly past me and (i want to do that) comes over me! -- never tried
Contender - looks a low boom, never seen one (apart form Villians old thing!) so don't know a lot about them.-- never tried
Vareo - Looks good, got a kite but as you spend longer going upwind than down, will be a pain (from what I have heard) 70% of the time.-- good boat with a good loyal following & I enjoyed mine but like ANY assy boat will suffer around the cans,Comfy without popping the knees.

Have the Vareo and love it, but must admit, I have had my eye on a Blaze recently. (Just a fraction of an eye really ... I enjoy flat water + the Vareo too much!) Sailed one a few times and got it going quite well. (The vareo was standing still by comparison)
Boom felt a bit low, but I think that was just because its wider and I was, at the time, used to the Vareos which you can literally walk under!
Ratfaces old 300 was always a good laugh, but he did keep sending it down the mine.
Contender wise - I didn't get on with mine (Explaining the sale .. ) but DaveL seems to enjoy sailing his, and also the other one that recently appeared at the club!
Might be wise to hold off for the Dinghy Show and have a poke and a prod, and play with some of the strings. Maybe arange to jump into one at one of the winter events this year? (BM / TT etc)

I got bored in the laser quickly and then was looking for something to push my boat handling on, I dont think anything (apart from an IC) would have worked quite as well on my appreciation of just what constitutes a flat boat as the 600 did. I couldn't agree more with TT, the 600 is a DREAM to windward, even in a chop it goes upwind like a train. The only thing I miss from the laser is the close racing, but I've only started missing that in the last 4 months or so as I have finally got up to the standard of being able to get the thing around a race course at least as fast as most of the open meeting fleet.
The only downside is how much good it has done for my repair skills, they do seem to have several little niggles in their design, like kicker bolts that you can't get at to tighten, and daggerboard cases that seem to constantly leek. Looking back at how much time I've spent on mending the 600 maybe I wouldn't have gone for it if I had appreciated how much work it needs but I think its worth it for the feeling of flying past just about everything to windward.

Cheers guys,
I think I made myself sound crippled, I am not, I tore my cruciate ligament when I was younger and suffered since. Although I have managed 6 years in a Laser I haven't stretched myself hence still in the Radial.
As for whats at the club, well of the above, only a 700. Thats why I a not fussed about the racing side of the thing. We did have a few 600's until the guys moved or sold them, did have a Vareo, never saw it out. I could get a sail on a 300 (thanks dics for the offer) as there is one at the Outdoor Centre.
Well as for Jims suggestion for a Canoe, I think thats as bad as S.A.L.T.Y.'s suggestion regarding the Moth, not yet, but I'd like to once I have a few more years experiencing "performance sailing"
I am on a Performance Sailing course next week, so may ask the coach then.

6ft and 12st?
What's the budget?
Blaze, Streaker, Supernova, OK, Solo?
------------- Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

The Blaze is very very comfy when hiking you just need to get the toestraps set correctly.
Fantastic when it is blowing and you cruise past everyone (esp Lasers) as they struggle like hell upwind. It is a boat I will go back to when time and money permits. Until now I just like to play in the 8.1 (but you have to hike like hell).
Easy answer it to have a go. If you have things like Phantoms and 8.1s floating around you will always have someone to race against. Even a well sailed Laser will keep up until you get on a reach.

I was just suggesting you try one... Mine gets loaned out quite regularly to sailors at my club when its a nice day, and no-one's failed to be able to sail it up and down the lake. They're not *that* hard to sail...

I think you would be suprised Richard, Its easier then you think to get a canoe round the cans! Having said that i found gybing a right handfull in a blow but that was just lack of time in the boat!

Those canoes still look very scary to me despite the positive comments above,
I do fancy a bash in a Blade or RS300 though.

Richard you are very welcome to come and try my contender (620) - you are the ideal height and weight, and they are reputedly easier than a 600 if you want to ease your way into single handed trapezing.
It is at Farmoor at the moment but should be at Grafham early in the new year (please god let nothing go wrong with the house sale)

Thanks for the offer of boats etc.
As for the Canoe, although I may be able to handle it, I still like the idea of getting into trapeezing
Question regarding the Contender though, the boom looks really low, how easy is it to learn?

status, if your anywhere near n.wales or falmouth then your welcome to have a sail in my 300.
having came from a radial into a 300 myself i can say that it has taught me so much about steering and sheeting for balance downwind. it also taught me a lot about slogging upwind but rather than going for pointing (as in laser) you need a combination of speed (low) and height. very difficult to get the balance. it is a beautiful looking boat which depowers nicely with kicker and downhaul, rewards good sailing and punishes bad sailing.
one thing i would say is that in breeze and chop the 300 is almost impossible to sail to handicap because you cant really go for it due to the fine bow digging in (it can be very frustrating like today). one other thing, the booms hurt like hell if they hit you on the head. i have a lovely line shaped lump as proved. this isnt normally a problem but my halyard slipped 6" over the course of the race
i wouldnt discount the 300 if i was you until you try one. its surprisingly friendly on the knees and a very comfortable hiking position.

I work mate! (Full time!)
Seriously I found an early one that was advetised, knew the bloke who had it advertised to get rid of it as he was unable to sail it due to injury. Saw it, paid him, towed it.
Hopefully come Saturday i can play and tweek it, really looking forward to sailing it (and swimming) will try and create a Blog as its probably the fastest boat I have sailed since F18 sailing when I first started out.
12 mtrs of sail upwind and 28mtrs downwind will definately prove interesting!

You've bought a great boat!! I got mine in June and still yet to master it. Every time out is an adventure, hoping to get up to club racing spring next year when I dont need a 20 mtr exclusion zone!? Loads of help on Yahoo, but you probably know that already.
Enjoy
