Perhaps finishing 'Top Brit' is not as bad as it sounds - Blackburn who won, has taken 12 years of trying to win the Worlds! Given Scott was youth world champion in 2005, finishing in top ten seems pretty good, plus a probable bump up the funding ladder.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

Sorry Rick but that sort of statement just winds me up.

So are you saying that everyone who does not win whatever the event in question may be is a loser?  And how would you describe yourself in this context?

One step forwards, 2 steps back...

So, Rick, should all open reports should just say that person A won and not mention the others ?

Now then calm down chaps don't get this all about face. That is not what I ment and you know that.

Everyone who enters a competition is worthy and without a fleet we would of course have no winners.

What I was saying is I'm not into the sort of media hype that is created around poor performance.

Eddie the Eagle is the classis case ,,,

Now when it comes to event reports I think the report should cover things that are newsworthy and of interest;

I would suggest this would include;

- Details of the winners
- Good performances from youth, master, lady etc
- Other notible strong performances
- and other interesting occurancies e.g. Fred did a classic pitchpole

A report simply can't mention everyone who shows up but I think if it covers the above points then it's a fair job.

Rick

Very true. I think that it is good to make note of the best improvers too as it gives them a mental pat on the back and gives some sort of reward for their efforts.

Eddie the Eagle is one... that swimmer a few years ago was another case point Rick. How he even got to the games was a myth to me. He may have been the best from his village but to watch that at an elite event was a joke. All of the british development squad would have been faster than him but they didn't get a chance for their big break.

I reckon I'd have had a chance of beating that swimmer ...

Here is an event report that I think ticks all the boxes.

http://www.mustoskiff.com/reports-and-news/2006/tide-ride.ht m

Mentions;

- The winners
- The first lady
- Good performance of newbie/youth
- Has a personal angle at the end
- Has nice pictures on & off the water

Yeah but you have to understand that, the Musto Skiff report is only good because it fits your purpose, ie promoting the class as a whole and providing an overview of the event to those who are interested. If you look at the 'Top Brit' report you will notice it is written by the RYA who's interests are promoting British sailors at events as well as providing info about the event.

I do not like reporting like this but you must realise a report serves as both an advert and a way of getting info to those interested (plus people like to see their name somewhere.)
