Yes it is...but to carry on the comparison... how many clubs have promoted and adopted  it as their prefferred youth trainer compared with numerous clubs that have adopted one or more of the youth dinghies.

But how many youths sail with their Dads (not PC but generally true) until they are old enough to take over a spitfire or F18, taking them out of the RYA route.

This has always been one of my biggest bugs about the RYA...If you Don't go through the RYA route you generally ARE NOT picked up by them until its too late. I know everyone is going to fly back at me on this issue and quote past sailors...Chris Law etc but sailing has changed since their day, unfrotunatley the attitude in the powers that be haven't.

Surely you'll have to agree that the "rya route" has been spectacularly successful in monohulls -just look at the medals that have been won. The sailing with dad route is fine but rarely produces Olympic Champions in this day and age. [the Phipps family excluded of course!]

Why would the RYA want to change a winning formula?

Why indeed Big Cat when the relatively small and ill funded youth cat scheme produced exceptional results?  And I think that Tom Phipps went through this training programme rather than learnt just by sailing with Dad.  Additionally if you look at the quality of the young sailors who were coming into the F18 fleet at a pretty tender age and keeping Hugh et al honest I think you'd have to say that if medals were the goal then we are on the right track.

This issue for me though is that there has been no public consultation as to whether the RYA should be taking the stance that it has.

The RYA have recently made submissions to the ISAF to drop the use of catamarans for youth training from 2009 and to drop catamarans from the Olympics from 2012. A group of catamaran sailors have created the following petition.

So why ARE they proposing just to do that and not proposing to invest more in Youth Cat sailing to get these medals?

IMO this is because the majority, (concession to the RYA), sail monohulls, coaches understand monohulls... no doubt Bigcat correct me if Im wrong the RYA tree goes Optimist, Topper, Laser (radial (One of the good things being proposed by YA)) and then what stay in lasers move up to a skiff? The Youths are just not encouraged to go into Cats.

However Adrian is right this is a discussion point for another forum. We SHOULD NOT detract from the apparent underhand way in which the RYA have brought these proposals.

Think this is all getting a shade off line .

whats important at the moment is what has been submitted and how it has been done we mustn't loose sight of this fact , folks can bicker endlessly about what has been and hasn't been done .

AS a cat sailor in my eyes for what reason or other the RYA has submitted submissions to ISAF that an incredible number of people in the UK find a huge slapp in the face , and consider detrimental to the future of cat sailing in the UK .

THe RYA deem that they do not have to make a timely explanation as to why they have made such submissions and why the cat sailing community where not consulted .

Discussion of how the RYA have missmanaged a large section of the sport and training within surely can be dealt with elsewhere .

I know the Topic is" YouthSailing the RYA and Catamarans" , but the "spirit" this topic has taken on is the revulsion of cat sailors to RYAs actions and what we can do about it ,  

 

Lets not loose sight of this .

What we need now is for pressure to brought to bear on the RYA to explain their thinking. Let's hear their side of the story. I'm sure they're watching this unfold with more than a little concern - or they should be.
