One thing which has puzzled me throughout the whole debate of which class is suitable for Women is the lack of testing which has been done - or if it has been done, has not been made publicly aware. The new Windsurf kit underwent a couple of weekends testing analysing various types of kit, why has a similar process not been carried out for the women's single hander?

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

To be honest this has really always been a two horse race (Europe and Radial) although there has been testing of the other classes, they did not really meet the international side of the criteria.

Both the Radial and Europe have been raced by Women for many years, what further testing could you want? The Windsurf kit was specially developed (as was the 49er in the mid 90s) for the role, hence the testing was required to judge perfromance...

Agreed on the point that both the classes have been raced by women for several years. However if submissions had been made by all classes, surely they should all have been given a proper 'run for their money'? Or the submissions should not have even been accepted if they did not fit the criteria in the first place?

Still has to pass one final hurdle though in the shape of the ISAF council!

RYA responds to equipment changes for 2008 Olympic Games
15 November 2004
After voting at the ISAF Conference on the equipment for 2008 Olympics concluded on Friday, it was announced that two classes have been replaced.

The Europe will be replaced by the Laser Radial as the single-handed dinghy women and the Mistral One Design Windsurfer by the Neil Pryde RS:X Hybrid for both men and women.

The RYA are already setting up review and putting in place plans for dealing with the change, specifically in the area of world class support, international championship qualification and grants systems. This will operate as follows:

General points

  • There shall be a new Olympic Development Squad (ODS) announced at 1 April 2005, selection for which will take into account ranking/results in the new Olympic classes.
  • The ODS for new Olympic classes shall have a maximum number of 6 boats/boards from 1 April 2005.
  • Only sailors aged 18yrs and over shall be eligible to attend ODS training. Exceptions may only be made, with agreement of the RYA Performance Directorate.
  • Sailors are invited to apply to attend ODS training (Nov-Mar 05) by registering intent with the ODS Manager, barrie.edgington@rya.org.uk
  • The RYA reserves the right to refuse, withdraw or terminate a sailors invitation to WC Squad training.
  • For the Nov 04 WC camp, applications must be submitted before 1700hrs on Wed 17th November . A list of sailors invited to the next training camp will be posted on the RYA web site by 0900hrs on Friday 19th November .
  • Sailors unable to attend the November training due to existing commitments (bearing in mind the short notification period) shall be considered for the Dec-Mar camps.
  • Grants systems that applied to the defunct classes shall not be applicable. Further details of qualification systems and National Ranking events for the Neil Pryde RSX and Laser Radial will be posted ASAP on the RYA and class websites.

World Class Performance sailors

  • ODS Sailors shall retain their positions, until 1 April 2005, providing they still meet the eligibility criteria (results excepted) for the ODS.
  • WC Performance sailors in defunct classes shall retain their position in the squad, subject to still meeting eligibility criteria and transferring to the replacement class, until the 2005 World Championships, when they must re-qualify.

Radial

  • Training in the Radial will begin with immediate effect.

RSX

  • Neil Pryde RSX training at the ODS Camps will include the use of Formula Class equipment, until such time as supply allows a move to the new board.

Weymouth has secured the 49er Europeans for 2006. Surely helps in the bid to have the Olympics in 2012.

Support the Bid go to:

or text LONDON to 82012

Did any1 else actually apply to go to the radial training - I applied to Barry Edginton, as per the RYA's instructions, and eventually at about 1pm on the Friday (note nothing went up on the website at 9am Friday, as the RYA promised) I got a rather brief email saying that the RYA had 'changed their minds' and weren't going to invite anyone after all. The closest they came to a reason was 'due to this late stage', but surely any1 who applied would have been prepared to change theor plans to go...would it have been that difficult to include a handful of sailors to the group of what was only a small squad to start with?

Was I the only one to get turned down or did other people get a similar message?

I think there should b more sailing in the olympics.

How about

  • Topper Class (women)
  • Vago Class (Mixed)
  • Moth Class (Male)

it would b good 2 get more emphasis on sailing in a country that is surounded by water and were only 10% of the inhabitants can sail competantly.

luv Helz
